We’re an Xfree86 household, Mister!

Writing XFree86 configs by hand and praying that the monitor wouldn't be irrevocably damaged by an errant setting.

Back in my day, our Windowing System was XFree86 and we hated it!

The future had a lot of XFree86 problems, if I recall.

I'm a bit late, but today is my 25th anniversary* of switching to Linux...

*I don't remember exactly when but a few years ago I searched for an old email address of mine and found a mailing-list post where I was asking for help configuring XFree86, so that's the date I recognize.

XCancel sounds like it should be the name of a utility that ships with XFree86

I want my kids to have the experiences I had. Drinking from the hose. Sitting out on the stoop on summer nights. Copying XFree86 configs into a marble notebook by hand, secure in the faith that maybe not today, but eventually one would work

I was a popular guy in the early Slackware days since I had figured out the magic art of calculating monitor timings so people could run their XFree86 at 1152*900 instead of 1024*768

I’m installing FreeBSD 2.1.0 to my PC-9821AS. It has 14MB ram and Canopus PowerWindow 928G so XFree86 should work well on it!

Funny enough the installer sees the full 16GB HD but appears to only like the first 2991MB. This is a common problem on early OSes, Win9x can’t handle large partitions well.

I cut my teeth on Redhat Linux 5.0. Yes, xfree86, compiling. Getting MAKE to spit out xfree86 sound card driver, and it friggin works.
August 10, 2026 at 3:43 AM
Nah, they just didn't open-source it at all initially. That's why XFree86 and the like had to redo a lot of work in the 90s.

Haha, att sitta uppe halva natten och modifiera nåt jävla ModeLine-värde i fucking xfree86-config i ett fatalt försök att få igång dubbla skärmar. Folk förstår inte hur bra de har det nu för tiden.
