Norway's fine on Xandr over Grindr user data in real-time bidding
On 12 October, Norway's data protection authority announced a fine of NOK 92 million (about €8.5 million) on Xandr, an advertising technology company owned by Microsoft, for processing data on Grindr users in Norway through real-time bidding from 2018 to 2020 without a legal basis. A Microsoft spokesperson told the press the conduct predates the acquisition and the company is reviewing the decision. Users can delete the advertising ID or refuse tracking in phone settings, and the official help pages do not say whether those settings cover the other data named in the decision.

Correction on Xandr: the 26 October post gave the fine as the approximate euro figure from the EDPB summary. Datatilsynet's decision of 2 October 2026 sets it at NOK 92 million. The rest of the post stands: a joint controller has to verify consent for its own processing.

The Norwegian DPA imposed an administrative fine of EUR 8 600 000 on Xandr Inc. Xandr did not obtain consent itself but relied on Grindr's consent. In the DPA's words, each joint controller must independently verify that consent is valid and covers its own processing.
