You know, I really liked Piers Anthony's Xanth novels when I was a teenager, but I don't pretend that they weren't hot garbage.
Rowling is a shitbag but also! HP is NOT GOOD. This isn’t one of those mildly nuanced “oh but Polanski is a genius” situations — HP is derivative, mediocre, critically insubstantial, even with a generous poptimism handicap. Its single outstanding quality as a cultural artifact is its ubiquity.

I was really into Xanth in middle school and when I tried rereading them a few backs I immediately burst into flames

whatever tiktok kids are reading will never be as bad for them as having the Xanth series in my high school library
I'm an elder millennial and I read Anne Rice and Danielle Steel and the freaking BEAR by Marian Engel as a preteen. I smuggled books from my parents' and grandparents' collections. I borrowed thrillers out of lending libraries. This is not a TikTok phenomenon. Let your kids read. They'll be fine.
