#YahooGroups
One of my first online fandoms was on forums and yahoogroups in 2000 and that was also the year I learned what doxxing was. One of my friends was nearly pushed out of a job because a jealous person from fandom doxxed them.

There have *always* been dickbiscuits around but they didn't get amplified.
"Fandoms used to be full of nice ppl before covid and then all the bullies and popular kids joined" is literally an "the earth is flat" tier false belief to me

For a while in the early 2000's, there was an honest-to-god Yahoogroups Anime and Manga Research Circle Mailing List. Me and 3 other guys were at the heart - two did their PhDs and then went into professional careers, I only got a master's; only one, Brent Allison, is now tenured faculty.

The sooner someone brings back YahooGroups that are based around e-mail mailing lists, the better.
Bluesky's new CEO Toni Schneider on the platform's reputation for being a liberal bubble: "Yes, we definitely want that to change. It is already changing. It certainly wasn’t designed to attract one specific group of people."

As someone who's been doing this since WebRing guestbooks and YahooGroups (and seen a depressing number of artists vanish over decades), a thing to keep in mind is some creatives are just busy (or uncomfortable with interactions) - don't expect a response/conversation, it's more about the gesture.

I think the death of YahooGroups is one of the saddest things on the net. The rec.arts type forums were a sad loss too.

Invite-only yahoogroups, 25 years ago. No riff-raff.
Can I ask y’all a genuine question?

In all your life online, what’s the greatest social media you’ve ever used?

Haha we probably traveled in the same circles at some points. Ever heard of the Cult of Kefka mailing list back on Yahoogroups?

#death

A friend passed away today. We'd been friends for 25 years and we became friends because Beecher & Keller fell in love on Oz and we took to message boards (and then yahoogroups, LJ, Twitter, Tumblr, etc) to talk about that and write stories and found fandom and friendships along the way

It breaks my heart to think of Yahoo! as the good old days. Truly was a great company. Yahoogroups made my batch alumni group possible. Yahoo! Messenger was my generation’s pehla pyaar meet-cute. And I blogged for Yahoo’s Real Beauty site too.

Yeah, people 'that's the joke'-ing the joke* isn't a new Bluesky thing.

* We called it 'Aspelling' back in the Yahoogroups days. In honour of the master of joke-reiteration.

I did use Myspace, for a bit, and Bebo—met Jennie on LJ. Miss Yahoogroups

But the flip side is it got a huge spike in users and then a falloff, that's normal, and they (the company) never wanted a mass userbase on here, they want the protocol and the ecosystem to work

It does, they can sell that

So many of mine were lost when angelfire went the way of the dodo. Yahoogroups too. I'm a little sad about the loss of all the Buffy fic I wrote when the show was still airing. I was in deeeeeep in that one

Inklings forum for discussion of #theology and #literature, after the fashion of the Oxford #Inklings, with a subforum for #writers to discuss their #WIP (works in progress)

#BookTok was driving me for awhile. As was some of the more esoteric YouTUbe channels. But personal websites in the day of earlyk YahooGroups.

Then there was Compuserve. That was a treasure house.
