Went through one of my memory cards today and found some cool captures of a Common Yellowthroat from the spring. I'm pretty sure he had a nest in the area. I'm not sure he could fit another insect in his little beak! #ColorADay #YellowThu #Birds #ECK

Cool! I also went birdwatching this morning at my local bog. I was able to see Wood Ducks, Spotted Sandpipers, Green Herons, Great Egrets, Great Blue Herons, Purple Martins, and Common Yellowthroats.

Welcome to confusing fall warbler season! Flushed a bird that seemed too big and green-gray to be anything but a CONW. Took three hours to get a second glimpse, then it acted more like a Mourning. Finally got photos after sunset, remembering fall Common Yellowthroats can be similar too? lol
Four blurry after dark photos of the same bird, deep in the brush. It is thick and round, with yellow on the throat and belly, grayish on the head, green wings, yellow undertail coverts, what appears to be a broken white eyering. Same bird, slightly more side view on the head now, eyering looks way less prominent. Same bird, now you can see the relatively short tail though. Same bird, eyering more prominent in this photo

Brown-headed Cowbirds are brood predators, laying an egg in another bird's nest. This juvenile is begging for food which the "parent" is about to supply. I suppose one or more hatchling yellowthroats did not survive as the cowbird hogged all the incoming grub.

A small brownish bird with a yellow throat is perched on a branch in a thicket of yellow flowers. This is a female Common Yellowthroat. Throughout their range, Common Yellowthroats breed in thick, tangled vegetation, but are most common in wet areas. In New York State, this warbler is primarily a bird of marshes, wet meadows, beaver ponds, and other moist shrubby areas. In the Adirondack Park, the Common Yellowthroat breeds in a variety of wetland ecological communities, including Shallow Emergent Marshes and Shrub Swamps.

Common yellowthroats have been pretty tricky for me. There's a spot here where I was hanging out for a while trying to catch the only indigo bunting in Portland, and it was just lousy with yellowthroats, but they're so tiny and move around and hide so much it was still hard to get pictures of them.
