Whatever Arriving here something from here must leave. Whenever a gift accepted another must be stolen. Whatever peak of a hill reached, bottom of a valley must be explored. Whenever what must die lives, another life is forfeit to maintain balance. If dust is cleaned from one surface, It's equal in volume and weight will settle elsewhere. Every debt must be paid, every bill settled. Payment is always due.

Wanted After All what a gift it is to work to keep this house together. our bedroom with its fallen plaster and broken laths; your slippers gaping at me from the ruined rug. how the rectangle of winter sunlight is an unsent letter we have written to each other — and the under-bed books and the poetry — the little surveys and soundings of the night-self finding that we are, after all, aright and aligned.

Christmas with your mother the tree has tinsel the lights are up the air is thick with broken promises a book, I say thanks, I say a look, you see both wary tip-toeing around the turkey (another dry old bird) heading for the wine (the only way to cope) the day will soon be over (relief as we drive away)

you shouldn’t have i discover a folder buried under years of carefully organized files called: personal. inside are only pictures— three copies of the same file of my mother’s dog, long dead. not an emergency contact, not old scans of expired passport paperwork, not letters from anyone i’ve lost. i shouldn’t be surprised at the lack of me. proof cuts— a small wrong thing wrapped by my own hands.

Gift The world arrives first. No asking. No terms. A weight, named blessing. A burden, named grace. To whom do you return it? God? Nature? History? The nameless? Gifts given without consent cut twice: you cannot refuse them, you cannot accept them. So the mind keeps one indictment only: You gave me what I must carry. Gratitude thins. Light darkens. The sacred torments and tallies. This life. This gift. It bruises. It brands. Cracked open by its weight, we bleed it back. Really- you shouldn't have.

Merry Christmases Year one, you blamed the buck’s fizz. Champagne never agreed with you. You were "merry", it was fine; My mother forgave you. Year two, you didn’t come at all. You blamed the Christmas Eve curry, Not the eleven pints of Guinness. But I forgave you. Years three, four, and five came and went in a blur. You ate your meal in the sitting room, Always preferring a liquid lunch. Away from us. Year six, I brought you whisky. It didn’t last the day. And neither did you. That’s when I knew. Year seven, you said you were trying. You should have tried harder To hide the bottles, And the betrayal on your breath. Year eight was bliss. You were gone, and I could breathe. Then came your knock. A gift in your hands. I said you shouldn’t have. And closed the door.
