#ZMachine
Storing the full gamestate (literally a zmachine RAM blob, which sounds crazy until you realize this thing ran on a Commodore 64), it requires no webhooks, no open ports, no reading from the Bluesky firehose.

Every move is a pure:

newState=reduce(prevState, playerMove)

All stored in atproto

Hit a solid milestone in my ZMachine interpreter for the Apple II. The various print opcodes now work, as demonstrated below by a test program running on my Apple IIGS that just dumps all the strings in a tiny v3 story (compiled in Inform 6).

oh cool! hadn't seen it. zmachine is pretty amazing atuff

The zork bot starts its own Bluesky root post mentioning you, so it controls the interaction settings.

Each bot reply stores the full game state in an atproto CBOR blob. So you can reply to earlier parts of the thread and branch off and try out different choices.

Bot just does zmachine(yourMove)

I just published the first release of my @circuitpython.org Z Machine emulator for the @adafruit.com Fruit Jam. It can run #Zork and other version 3 #zmachine games. Works with Fruit Jam OS too. Download the release here:

Section 3 of the spec fully implemented in my Apple II zmachine interpreter. Test program below is dumping strings from Czech (running on my IIGS)

Twine rules and it uses about 100,000x the power of the ZMachine to render clickable links

Fellow #InfoCom text adventure fans, the newest #vezza #zmachine #interpreter is now available for the #amstrad #nc200 running CPMish. Using the glorious built in LCD display at 79x18 characters, it was a lot of fun to build. Special mention to Matthew Logue for […]

I built Zork in Typescript+React :~) All this talk of Zork made me want to play it again, and Microsoft released the original Zork 1, 2, and 3 source code last November so I build a node+react app that downloads the original .z3 package and runs it inside zmachine. First time using rezi for TUI

Sorry, there is a write-up! I meant more src, poking at bot wrapping zmachine and atproto stuff specifically.

Czech (a ZMachine test story) now passes running on my Apple II ZMachine interpreter Melbor! Still plenty to do for it to be fully useable for playing games, but this is an important milestone because it means the core VM works.

Been thinking about my zmachine games with @bskyplays.bsky.social - there's something I like about the simplicity of "full game state lives in the threas, you can play games using vanilla Bluesky clients"

Hey look it's Zork using an actual zmachine vm for NES/Famicom. I'll probably give this a spin on my mister in the next few days. #retrogaming #nes #famicom #zork #if

After much testing and code comparison, the new Feb 2025 Release of #vezza - my #z80 high speed #zmachine is ready! Took way longer than expected to synchronize across all of the code bases, particularly making sure that all optimizations made it across all […]

Did you know that the CPZ Machine has 5 retro color themes to choose from for your #ZMachine #Zork adventures? This one is called “Amiga”. @adafruit.com @circuitpython.org

Has been one year already? This week marks the one year anniversary of my initial release of #Zork / #ZMachine for the #FruitJam. It is written in @circuitpython.org and can run standalone or with Fruit Jam OS.

Fruit Jam, Zork and the Z Machine
In the 80s before ChatGPT, gamers had another way to have conversations with their computers: Zork and Z Machine games.

2025 saw the release of the @adafruit.com #FruitJam, a great device for building and playing retro games IMO. I wrote a #ZMachine #Zork emulator and a 80s style lunar lander game for it. Make your New Year’s resolution to get one.

Now that it's had a little testing other than me (Thanks Brian Chiha!) I'm making my #vezza for the #TEC-1G more readily available, similar to my #zxspectrum .tap files. #zmachine text adventures for all #z80 machines! I've put up 3 sample builds to download […]
