I swear I really do listen to all of your comments (good & bad), and this new blog features a data viz that has been requested by many of you.

In my latest entry, I share an animation of temperature departures by latitude for every month from 1950 to 2025. Check it out! zacklabe.com/climate-viz-...

The average global temperature so far this year (for the January-August period) is now up to the 2nd warmest on record since the start of this dataset...

The daily global mean sea surface temperature is beginning to rise once again toward more anomalous value... will be keeping an eye on how this evolves in the coming months as La Niña quickly fades. 🌊

🚨 My graphic showing cumulative change in the mass of reference glaciers around the world has now been updated with 2025's data. We are rapidly losing ice.

Sea surface temperatures are already surging to record high levels for this time of year in key El Niño monitoring areas.

Sea surface temperatures are way above average in parts of the #Arctic as of last month, particularly in the Kara Sea Basin extending to around Svalbard and the Greenland Sea. This is also found in the Hudson Bay due to their very early sea ice melt-out.

Compare different regions! These graphics look at the varying seasonality and trends in the magnitude of monthly temperature anomalies since 1940 for the Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, Arctic, and Antarctic...

🚨 Well that's that. The Barents Sea had its earliest melt-out of #Arctic sea ice on record this summer!

ICYMI: I wrote up a blog on this extreme event: zacklabe.com/climate-viz-.... This is already one of the fastest changing climates in the world.

There's still a lot of year-to-year variability in patterns of ocean sea surface temperatures, but there's something else clearly happening... Watch the human-caused warming trend evolve over the last 100 years during the month of April (including to 2026).

Record high ocean temperatures continued across the North Pacific in April 2026 relative to the entire rest of the historical record for the month.

This graph shows the average for a band across the midlatitudes for every March from 1854-2026 using
NOAA ERSSTv5 data (psl.noaa.gov/data/gridded...).

Long-term trends in Arctic sea-ice concentration are much more widespread in August (and September) than during other months. The largest declines are in parts of the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas.

Sea ice concentration = fraction of ice-cover. More info at doi.org/10.1175/BAMS...
