More people should be reading old smut. It's sexy but in a confusing way. In Dacre's Zofloya, the devil comes to earth and is super hot, so you end up having to throw a teenager off a cliff about it. Plus banditti. Plus teleporting.

5) Charlotte Dacre

Dacre is a great example of the many women who wrote across genres in the Gothic. She was a poet and novelist. She's probably most famous for Zofloya - the tale of a woman who takes demonic temptation seriously and descends into ever more sanguinary crimes 12/

Ferocious - Jane Eyre by Brontë
Quiet - Rhine Journey by Ann Schlee
Decadent - Zofloya by Dacre (saying Against Nature by Huysmans would be cheating, right?)
Incomparable - In Search of Lost Time by Proust
1) ferocious—Frankenstein by Shelley
2) quiet—Mansfield Park by Austen
3) decadent—Max by Katherine Cecil Thurston
4 incomparable—The Land of Spices by Kate O’Brien

Didn't quite articulate this in this post, but what's so subtly insidious (laudatory? 🤔) about Zofloya (1806) is that, libidinally, the whole novel is setting the reader up to feel a great sense of relief when [spoiler?] the female protagonist is finally flung unceremoniously into the depths of hell

It's extremely readable! And there may be reviews at the time or even now that mention similar narratives before 1806 (though Zofloya did cause a stir when it was published).

Reading Dacre’s Zofloya right now!
Really pleased that people are enjoying this video and posting their own thoughts 😍
I have made another little video of Early Gothic reading recommendations but this time they're (slightly) less well-known!

Read 'The Murderer' by Charlotte Dacre today. A real fun (and over the top) exploration of a guilty conscience made quite horrifyingly literal!

Particularly intrigued by Dacre's portrayal of the devil here (contrast with Zofloya!)

FINALLY finished my September stack (I was three books behind), so here is the October TBR. Honestly, my TBR is usually mostly spooky books but October has to be all spooky books! Got some brand new ones, some that have been sitting on the big pile for too long, and some classics. 📚💙
