Melting at the White Place.
On this day in 2020 we were in Abiqui, NM, the home of Georgia O'Keeffe. It was weird, intimate, and remarkably small of scale. #photography #landscapephotography #abiqui
This is a photograph of an intimate scene near Abiqui, New Mexico. The frame is divided horizontally into three parts. The top part, about 25% of the frame, is a shelf of red stone, with gray clay-like material resting above it. The shelf sits atop a layer of gray rock that is about 40% of the frame, and looks like a cliff face. The bottom of the frame captures the area below the cliff, and is dotted with white clay and red rocks, like the rocks holding up the shelf. At a point in the shelf, about one-third of the frame from the right edge, there is a weakness through which clay from the upper shelf has poured over the cliff into the bottom. It looks like a frozen waterfall.

Hiked the white place yesterday. O, what wonder to be found in limestone, siltstone. 25 million years old, or so. Reworked, eroded and solidified volcanic ash.

Indigenous people inhabited Rio Chama Valley for thousands of years before the Spanish settled and colonized here in the 1700s.

I love Taos, Abiqui and Santa Fe. I am a huge fan of the art museums in Taos. Abiqui is close to Ojo Caliente Hot Springs, also the Ghost Ranch. I really recommend the Abiqui Inn.

Not from NM, but feel a deep connection via my grandfather, who lived in ABQ most of his life, and my parents, who moved to SF (then Abiqui) in 1989. My Mom, who was born in AZ, became truly herself at 58 after moving back to the SW. And I treasure her turquoise pieces.

My favorite picture of O'Keeffe is the last one here, taken by Yousuf Karsh in the zaguan of her Abiqui adobe house. It's very New Mexico and speaks to her connection with bones (an upcoming post for us). It was also amazing to stand in that space and imagine this picture being taken.

I got out that way one time, back in the 90s! Only had one free day, though, and did a roadtrip up from Santa Fe, through Taos, into the Carson National Forest, and down through Abiqui back to Santa Fe. It was sundown by the time we were passing Ghost Ranch, though, so we couldn’t stop. 💔
