It is SOMETHING…about 45 minutes north of Santa Fe & about 20 minutes from Abiqui.

I got out that way one time, back in the 90s! Only had one free day, though, and did a roadtrip up from Santa Fe, through Taos, into the Carson National Forest, and down through Abiqui back to Santa Fe. It was sundown by the time we were passing Ghost Ranch, though, so we couldn’t stop. 💔

This is Cass Torrence's first publication ever! Give her a round of applause or go find her on Insta at cassierin. "Georgia's House" is in Issue #18, and really captured my heart as someone who grew up in New Mexico.

Wonderful to look out the window of Ghost Ranch and see that her painting exactly matches the curve of the road below:

Melting at the White Place.
On this day in 2020 we were in Abiqui, NM, the home of Georgia O'Keeffe. It was weird, intimate, and remarkably small of scale. #photography #landscapephotography #abiqui

I was fascinated by O'Keeffe's Abiqui living room and the tour guide pointed out her stereo system left as it was.

O'Keeffe also painted from window views. Her studio in Abiqui.

O'Keeffe often abstracted architectural elements of the Abiqui house.

For many years O'Keeffe worked at acquiring and restoring the Abiqui house (a less harsh climate) with the awesome zaguan and corner windows. Part of her New Mexico mystique is definitely these buildings.

Georgia O'Keeffe was associated with a few places - Palo Duro Canyon in TX, NYC and Lake George (while Alfred Stieglitz was living) and Ghost Ranch and Abiqui, New Mexico. She painted and was often photographed at her Ghost Ranch house....

Photographers also likes to take pictures of her amazing houses in New Mexico at Ghost Ranch and in Abiqui. More on those tomorrow.

My favorite picture of O'Keeffe is the last one here, taken by Yousuf Karsh in the zaguan of her Abiqui adobe house. It's very New Mexico and speaks to her connection with bones (an upcoming post for us). It was also amazing to stand in that space and imagine this picture being taken.

I think about this O'Keeffe Chama River painting every time I drive down from Chama to Abiqui.

She also painted a formation called The Pedernal near her Ghost Ranch house up between Abiqui and Chama, New Mexico. (I have a smaller formation that can be seen only driving up my street in ABQ. I call it the Pedernalita.)

O'Keeffe often painted an area known as The White Place, near Abiqui, New Mexico (you can hike there) and The Black Place near Farmington, NM, where she would camp and paint.

Some of my favorites include her "looking out from inside a tent" and the many abstractions of her patio in Abiqui, New Mexico (a house you can tour in season).

I love Taos, Abiqui and Santa Fe. I am a huge fan of the art museums in Taos. Abiqui is close to Ojo Caliente Hot Springs, also the Ghost Ranch. I really recommend the Abiqui Inn.
