Had fun writing up a scene between my college raven keeper & the campus police chief. He's a bit of a cuss & she is former military with a motherly heart.

WooHoo! Managed to complete 2 scenes & knit them together in a chapter I'd been struggling with...despite a flare-up in my hands of the Creaking Beast (aka, arthritis). I win! 😁 ✍️🏼

Got some sweet little news just now. The artist I've been in contact with about my buying their work for my cover art has said yes. Happy dance! His images match my stories' vibe perfectly! 🤸‍♂️

Look for some entertaining "character trailers" in the coming weeks. Here's the first, a 22-second general introduction! (🔊 up for appropriately dramatic music.)

RESOLUTE DEATH, an #AcademicMystery, set at a fictional college in the Driftless Region of western Wisconsin.

Someone just posted about something they did "back in 2014" as if it were The Ancient Times. Maybe I'll need to shift the marketing for my forthcoming book to "historical academic mystery!"

Front and back cover of Resolute Death by J.A. Jablonski. Original art: Stephen Richards. Front is a presentation. Against an all-white background, is a large black raven in flight. All-caps, dark red title is set midway on the cover. Text below in a small, black serif font reads "An Osley College Novel." Below that, in a dark red font matching the title is the author's name. The back cover shows more of Richards' design: black and grey, ink-wash drawings of tree trunks against a white background. Superimposed is the book description/blurb: a roughly, dark-red outlined box enclosing the book's description: "Resolute Death offers an intense, immersive tale with masterful plotting. An essential read for those who love an intricately woven mystery that highlights loss, memory, retribution, and found family. When a glamorous music professor is found dead in the carillon tower of Osley College, a small liberal arts college in the Driftless Region of western Wisconsin, Maude Ascham, the new chief of campus police, has her hands full. Her investigation leads to porn-watching students, an angry boyfriend, a betrayed lover, and feuding colleagues. Students, faculty, and staff: all are implicated. When the Dean of Libraries commits a gruesome suicide three weeks later, the investigation becomes more than a matter of murder. Who is blackmailing James North, the bereaved, ex-hobo English professor and celebrated poet? Why would someone destroy the 175-year-old bonsai of the cantankerous college gardener? Was last December’s drowning of a senior music student really an accident? And what of Ariel Ellis, the eccentric, blue-haired barista, who is clearly hiding something behind their theatrical banter; and Esha Larkin, the maps librarian seen weeping on the old library’s roof at dawn? Each appears to hold a vital piece of a dangerous puzzle. There is a killer on campus . . . can they be stopped?"

Working on the back-of-book synopsis for my forthcoming academic mystery. It reminds me of my days as an information organization editor (& later, professor) when I taught text abstracting. It wasn't easy then and it's still a challenge now!

Currently -14F here (wind chill -37F). Will manage the day with hot oatmeal & tea for breakfast, hot soup for lunch, hot chocolate as mid-afternoon pick-me-up, & hot chicken pot pie w/biscuit topping for dinner.

...and some all-day smokin' hot proofreading on forthcoming ##AcademicMystery 🔥📝

Gave an Advance Reader Copy of my (very soon) forthcoming academic mystery to my dentist yesterday. He's been hearing hubs & me talk about it for the past few years, so it seemed only right. (He says he isn't into mysteries but was glad to have it.) 🦷 😁

Dipping into Sayers' GAUDY NIGHT (1935) for some comfort reading tonight. More than before I am struck how hard she had to push to make her clutch of strong academic women be strong.

Ravens, cultural symbols of intelligence, creation, and death, are a visual motif in my #AcademicMystery storytelling. The evocative cover art for RESOLUTE DEATH by UK artist Stephen Richards perfectly embodies their grim and occasionally witty presence.

Left: Black and white ink wash drawing of tree trunks. Right: The black silhouette of a raven in flight on a dark red back ground. Small text below one tree trunk reads "Original Cover Art: Stephen Richards." Larger text along the bottom of image reads "Cover Reveal 1 October 2026."

Regarding my previous post & the sex scene. Turns out I'd already written most it (not bad, if I do say so myself 😉). It's the lead-up context & scenes that need work as neither the context or outcome are typical. Very fun to sort it all.

Oh my...mid-proofing my forthcoming academic mystery & a few rather sweet lines of dialogue for a sex scene in Bk 2 came to mind. Solved a plot point in two different ways! Quickly wrote it down & got back to the work of the day. 😄
