Correction and note on alt-text: in this screenshot, beta-star has not yet reached 30 centimeters.
Beta-star, in particle colliders, is a function related to how the beam oscillates transversely near the collision point (and can be used to calculate its thickness vertically or horizontally).

Each plate in this photo contains 4 sets of 4 permanent #magnets. Each will have 36 point measurements with a Teslameter, and 12 measurements with a Helmholtz Coil/Fluxmeter. 48 measurements/plate, lots of plates left to get baseline measurements.

We installed our permanent #magnet samples on tripods in the CEBAF #accelerator enclosure. These, along with those in my previous post, will be used to study how the magnets degrade in a #radiation environment.

Yes, a lot of infrastructure has to be rebuilt.
My community of #acceleratorPhysics got destroyed on Twitter, so it made it easier to move.
We need to pay attention to this infrastructure to make sure we don't have to lose it all if Bluesky gets similarly bought out or corrupted.

For those asking, it really is not as simple as just switching over. I have lists and hashtags and follows that took me years to compile and establish in the other place. And while this app has gained momentum recently, there is still a large portion of our readership that has never heard of it.

Seems like the main serious work task in #acceleratorPhysics is putting misalignments in elements. It's always been painful and I put it off as long as possible. Occasionally I actually do have to do this work.

On this day in 1986, the Tandem Accelerator Superconducting Cyclotron was activated at Chalk River Laboratories in Deep River, Ontario. It was the world's first Tandem Accelerator, able to accelerate most elements to 10 MeV per nucleon. It was decommissioned in 1996.
