Excited to share work out in @jacs.acspublications.org led by Yuxuan and @genlichem.bsky.social on activity-based sensing of acetaldehyde using an inverse electron-demand Diels-Alder reaction, enabling selective detection of two-carbon metabolism! pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...
An Inverse Electron-Demand Diels–Alder Approach to Selective Activity-Based Sensing of Acetaldehyde in Living Cells
Acetaldehyde (AA) is a reactive aldehyde primarily produced in cells as a metabolic intermediate during ethanol oxidation. Excess AA, often resulting from impaired AA detoxification, leads to aberrant...

life is a constant battle to defend the honour of the beautiful maiden ethanol against the traitorous ploys of the blackgaurd acetaldehyde

Here's my problem with this report:

The alleged primary carcinogen, acetaldehyde?

It's -EVERYWHERE-.

Bread, fruit, vegetables, coffee, dairy products, honey, soda, iced tea, even MUSTARD.

For my first post of 2025, here's the now-traditional graphic on the biochemistry behind hangovers for #NationalHangoverDay. Happy New Year to you all!

Brilliant!😀👍 Sounds like you've discovered a cornerstone of Joshual Leisk's (BornFree) disease model.

Zinc depleted by chronic pathogen acetaldehyde production & DMT-1 transporter blockade.

Zinc a cofactor for methylation, all histamine/catecholamine, etc, degradation, activating B-vits, etc.

Methanol gets converted into formaldehyde, by the alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme (which, in the normal course of events, converts ethanol into acetaldehyde).

Formaldehyde is much more poisonous than acetaldehyde is - also, the enzyme will convert methanol BEFORE it does ethanol, given the choice.

Why does red wine trigger headaches for some people?

Chemists say the answer may lie in quercetin, a natural compound in grape skins that can interfere with alcohol metabolism and spike acetaldehyde levels.

Acetate is not the dangerous metabolite - it's basically vinegar.

The dangerous metabolite of alcohol is the intermediate acetaldehyde - (ehtanol -> acetaldehyde -> acetate)

Your liver turns alcohol into acetaldehyde. ZBiotics introduces a bacteria to break that down further into acetate in your gut, intended to reduce hangovers the next day.

A few 3D prints from this week's organic chemistry class: an NBO enolate alkylation transition state and a pi MO model for the enolate of acetaldehyde. We reviewed the SN2 reaction and noted the larger "on-C" orbital of the nucleophilic pi2 MO! #ChemSky #CompChemSky #3DP #3Dprint #3DModels #prusa 🧪

acetaldehyde breakdown is inhibited by some of the chemicals in tea, so a coffee is better than a tea for a hangover. however acetaldehyde breakdown is hastened by taurine. which means that unironically the best hangover cure is actually to slam a monster energy drink

As part of #dryjanuary ,
it is important to know that the metabolite of alcohol, acetaldehyde, is a class one carcinogen. If you are alcohol intolerant, you will accumulate acetaldehyde, that over time can cause DNA damage that can lead to cancer. #alcohol #genetics #Aldh2

Pssstt chat, candida overgrowth (the white on the tongue) is ever so present oh so often in long covid because it makes acetaldehyde-salsolinol which is toxic to the like whole dopamine system.

There is an overlap in worst cases that is being ignored off this.

Really coulda used this info in the 90's. I just ate Long John Silver's the next day in the hopes that the grease would soak up the booze.

"The only byproduct was acetaldehyde, an easily removable industrial chemical with commercial value."

Acetaldehyde is a solvent in the rubber, tanning and paper industries, and is considered a probable human carcinogen.

So yeah. Sounds FANTASTIC. Really. 🤡

Since we already established AMINOCYCLOPROPANOL is an inhibitor of aldehyde dehydrogenase, it stops the conversion of acetaldehyde to acetic acid, building up acetaldehyde in the body, making you feel super sick and nauseous.

5.5% of all cancer cases worldwide"

Acetaldehyde has a cidery aroma and a curious, flat texture. For examples of the flavors, look to intentionally oxidized wines like sherry and madeira: the taste that distinguishes these beverages from traditional wine is their the elevated level of acetaldehyde. 3/
