This always reminds me of Wallace Stevens' statement that "A poem is a meteor" in 'Adagia', similarly existing by virtue of its self-annihilation.

A proverb collected in Erasmus's Adagia: "Furemque fur cognoscit et lupum lupus." "And a thief knows a thief and a wolf knows a wolf." 🐺 #lingulatina #adagia #erasmus #proverb #latin #proverbs

Erasmus in Adagia, “To dress within the formal limits and with an air gives men, as the Greek line testifies, authority.”

Wine and music are not good until afternoon. But poetry is like prayer in that it is most effective in solitude and in the times of solitude as, for example, in the earliest morning. (Adagia, 903)

Another Latin proverb for doing a pointless or absurd thing: sōlī lūmen īnferre. To bring light to the sun. From Erasmus’s Adagia. #lingualatina

Like many archives we still have (and use) our original card catalogue - and it does throw up the occasional surprise.

Before you say "bless you", this is a real latin term! It means 'the state of being able to achieve honours' and it appeared in Erasmus' 16th century Adagia and in Shakespeare :)

It is commonly traced to the Roman writer Marcus Terentius Varro, who uses the thought in De Re Rustica (“if man is a bubble, all the more so is an old man”), and it was later popularised across Europe through proverb collections such as Erasmus’s Adagia.

6-1-1 for top 32 of the Saturday PTQ at Atlanta!! Lost round 1 to Boros with adagia and knight luminaries, and declined to lose again. Got quite lucky throughout, drew acolyte a bunch and my round 6 opponent with a better deck mulliganed a ton. Excited to draft tomorrow! @fireshoes.bsky.social
