Finally, if you thought the #pilum was just for throwing, here it is being used in hand-to-hand combat on #Adamclisi metopes. Rules, it seems, were made for breaking. #ReliefWednesday

Een paar weken geleden bezocht ik #Adamclisi in Roemenië: een gereconstrueerd Romeins overwinningsmonument, een oude stad, een museum, moderne ideologie en misschien het Roemeense antwoord op Katwijk-aan-Zee.

Vegetius conveys mixed messaging about whether stabbing (punctim) or chopping (caesim) with a #gladius were better, but the troops on the #Adamclisi monument are happily doing both. #ReliefWednesday

And in the early 2nd century AD, everybody was still wearing the #gladius on the right hip ... weren't they?! #Adamclisi #ReliefWednesday

Las metopas de Adamclisi son una fuente iconográfica que pasa desapercibida, pero es contemporánea a la sobrevalorada columna de Trajano y mucho más rigurosa.
On #ReliefWednesday, let's consider some rule-breaking on the Tropaeum Traiani at #Adamclisi in the Dobruja (ROM). These metopes are weathered and damaged, but the way each legionary is holding his weighted #pilum by his side (thumb forward) rather than raised (thumb back) is plainly visible.

had some beers last night and came home and was reading on my phone before bed, but I forgot about what, until seeing my browser pointed at a wiki page for Ancient Dacian Swords

The one on the left (more info here: museum.wales/collections/...) has an inlay pattern on the sheath (volutes and hatching) very similar to some of the space-filler designs on (sword) scabbards depicted on the Adamclisi metopes. #VoluteMonday

Following the announcement of his death (t.co/euG9DNsrn3), we said farewell to Jon last Friday with anecdotes, laughter, music, and – of course – Trajan's Column played an important part.

... légionnaires sont arrivés au contact des paysans, ça a bien poutré, ils sont partis en déroute par paquet de mille et c'était enfin plié.
J'espère que la prochaine bataille, Adamclisi entre romains et daces, ne sera pas aussi pénible.

It is interesting that the Dioscuri are depicted carrying lances underarm, which is unusual for Roman cavalry this early. Of course, the Adamclisi sculptors also liked to break with tradition.

Tropaeum Traiani at Adamclisi, Romania, before, during and after its (very liberal) reconstruction in the 1970s. Built in 109 to commemorate Trajan's victory in the Dacian Wars, allegedly on the site of a battle fought in winter of 101-102. #RomanEmpire

Here's an example from present-day Romania, near Adamclisi, which shows scenes from the Dacian war in the early 100s. The legionary has reinforcing crossbars on his helmet, and arm protection.
