Everyone would wind up better off if we hadn’t made the bedrock revenue source for the Internet adclicks and tracking cookies, things that were clearly falling prey to Goodhart’s Law and proving to be perverse incentives over 20 years ago, and have only gotten worse.

This absurdity is LITERALLY why the business is going subscription on the newsroom front and most good journalists that can carry an audience are going independent. AdClicks are an unsustainable income source that generally can't even cover petty cashflow requirements.

Every newspaper operates on this financial model now, from the Guardian to the Daily Mail. No better way to get that adclicks money than to enrage people with outrageous headlines so they'll spread it and generate more clicks.
