Given recent interest in the ankylosaur, Spicomellus & its extreme armour, I thought l'd share this photo of an #aetosaur spike for this #FossilFriday. Highlights how wonderfully weird #Triassic reptiles pioneered many striking traits once thought limited to dinosaurs.

Hoplosuchus kayi, apex predator of the morrison, ate sauropodds alive by the regular, and is in serious need of a CT scanning and revision since it was described as a late-surviving aetosaur in 1926

discovered in a fun way too, here's an article by Riley Black www.smithsonianmag.com/science-natu...

I somehow managed to post this without using #sciart tags.

#dicynodont #rhynchosaur #aetosaur
Like a Tuatara, a rhynchosaur might have looked like a typical large-headed lizard. Here are two sets of illustrations, the top showing a rhynchosaur, the bottom a dicynodont.

I applied the same models for fleshy and beaked to both, and found them to a different model from each other.

Left wins.

Aetosaurs are such dorks, I love them. "Armadillodiles," they were doing the living tank thing when dinosaurs were largely fuzzy Triassic pipsqueaks.

This is the latest aetosaur to be named, Garzapelta.

A New paratypothoracin aetosaur (Archosauria: Pseudosuchia) from the Upper Triassic Dharmaram Formation of India and its biostratigraphic implications
The Upper Triassic lower Dharmaram Formation of India has yielded a highly diverse archosaur-dominated fauna that included a paratypothoracin aetosaur Venkatasuchus armatum, a plateosaurian sauropo...

March 2018. I’m in the Triassic near Canyonlands National Park, out to prospect but aware how stingy the Chinle Fm. can be. I pull myself up on a low ledge and see invertebrate traces. Then dinosaur and aetosaur tracks. Then the palm-like plant Sanmiguelia. I had a lot of field notes to take. 🧪

From Late Triassic Cooper Canyon Formation, Texas, "Garza shield" is an aetosaur whose armor displays a mix of characteristics that suggest convergent evolution might not have been accounted for in previous phylogenetic analysis of its group

For #FossilFriday here is the partial skull and carapace of the recently described ‘carnivorous aetosaur’ from the Late Triassic of Texas. It provides significant new information about Coahomasuchus kahleorum.

Oh I forgot/learned. We also have:

- bite marks on aetosaur armor made either by a paracrocodylomorph or phytosaur
- bite marks on rhynchosaur skulls made by phytosaurs and dinosauriforms

Sometimes all you need is a small fragment of a fossil for an ID. This Desmatosuchus osteoderm preserves the anterior lamina and rough lateral margin unique to the aetosaur taxon. #fossilfriday #triassicpark 🦖🧪

happy #fossilfriday! this is desmatosuchus, an aetosaur from late triassic america 🇺🇸 despite its resemblance to ankylosaurian dinosaurs, desmatosuchus and its relatives were pseudosuchians, belonging to the same branch of archosauria as crocodilians

The aetosaur Stagonolepis olenkae had forelimbs like those of large aetosaurs, built for scratch-digging. But unusually, it had osteoderms all over its forelimbs, even the top of its hands.
