Editor: Whatcha got?

Agent: New YA series. The first two books are intricate worldbuilding with a complex characters and an interesting setting.

Editor: *yawns*

Agent: But the third book is nothing except how the characters want to fuck.

Editor: *eyes widen* Go on.

Agent: And the best part about the series finale?

Editor: *gasping* What?

Agent: All of those dozens and dozens of horny characters?

Editor: WHAT?????

Agent: They're now COLOR-CODED so every paragraph is nothing but HORNY COLORS FUCKING

Editor: *literally dies*

Agent: But in book four, there's an orgy!

Editor: *sitting up* Oh I don't know if—

Agent: A citywide orgy brought on by magical events!

Editor: *eyebrows raised* That's not—

Agent: In which each character gets it on...BUT ONLY WITH THEIR ONE TRUE LOVE

Editor: *blacks out*
January 9, 2025 at 3:17 PM
Agent: Everyone's horny all the time but, and here's the thing, ONLY HORNY FOR THEIR ONE TRUE LOVE

Editor: *salivates* Then they fuck?

Agent: No! But the plot needs them to kiss. A lot.

Editor: *strings of drool* And does that plot move the series forward?

Agent: NO!

Editor: *lies down*

Agent: SO many! The characters rant against their sociocultural norms in page-long monologues! And then...

Editor *holds breath*

Agent: *leans in* ...and then they reaffirm everything they say they hate by their actions!

Editor: *climaxes*

crazy that we know more about what happened to the six mil some guy gave to a forbes editor than we do about the fate of the 50k Tom Homan received in a Cava bag from an undercover FBI agent

Agent: You haven't heard the best part! In the very last book of the series, they introduce another bunch of brand new characters!

Editor: *moans softly* What about the established ones?

Agent: Barely mentioned at all!

Editor: *weeps with joy* Are the new characters horny?

Agent: SO horny.

AUTHOR: I love you, man!
EDITOR: I love YOU, man!

The Next Day

AGENT: Oh god, I left my author unsupervised, what did she agree to?!

Honestly authors, if your contract has language in there about faithful translation, TALK TO YOUR EDITOR AND AGENT because this isn’t it.
last month, one of my coworkers decided to use AI translation for a job. the AI skipped about 1/4 of the source text and added other stuff that didn't exist in the source. my coworkers trusted the bot output and went ahead and published this. i discovered the errors so i got the job of cleaning up.

EDITOR: Yes. I am sold. When?
AGENT: She has five books due next year. We talked about this at the meeting.
HEROINE: Was that a meeting? I thought it was an intervention.

I’m not a bestseller or rich and know everything could crumble at any moment, but I just spent a few days in NYC doing a book thing and hanging out with my agent, my editor, my NYT editor, readers, and friends. Dreams do come true. Keep going. You, me, everyone. Keep at it.

EMILY WILSON'S AGENT: But she doesn't actually have any particular expertise in that—
COMMISSIONING EDITOR: OK, *two* truckloads of gold
I always thought the Beatles biopics were a bad idea. This image only seems to confirm that.

my agent: Editor is ready for your next pitch.
me: *sends 2 pitches*
agent: *sends back edits*
me: *sends back edits, plus a third pitch*
me: *waits*
me: I HAVE MORE.

LATER AT DINNER

AGENT & EDITOR: What was that thing you mentioned on the panel?!
HEROINE: Ok, so somebody posts this video, and it’s this woman alone in the mountains, and then [thing] and [other thing]…
*time passes*
HEROINE: …stuffed upside down in a crevasse!
AGENT: *flags down waiter for booze*

One of the things I’m really enjoying about Bluesky atm is that neither my agent nor my editor are here yet, so they can’t see how much time I’m wasting

reading the bookforum review of Middlemen and I expect that the scholarly publishing equivalent of the agent is the freelance developmental editor. if conglomeration drove the rise of the agent, austerity drove the rise of the latter—the editor who actually edits, helps w/ the proposal, etc.

NOTE TO WRITERS (esp. Sorkin, Aaron) If any studio exec, producer, agent, publisher, editor, or rando restaurant waiter at Spago in 1993, ever says, "That's not believable," you just point them here ⬇️

I got a VERY excited call from my editor yesterday, then my agent joined the call, then I thought “Oh Jesus, is this about the Hugos?” but no! You glorious weirdos bought so many copies that THIS happened!

Happy Valentine’s Day.
