In partial defense of the article here's the part most people didn't read that preemptively acknowledges a common response. I think perhaps a way of better understanding the point he's trying to make is to flip it...
There are, as always, logical explanations for such a phenomenon. In our algorithm-driven age, it’s entirely possible to design a curated world where you never encounter “Choosin’ Texas”: You don’t engage with country content, you don’t listen to country playlists, you don’t even remove your earbuds when you enter a coffee shop, should twang be coming out of the speakers. Gone are the days of the monoculture radio hit. Shared experiences are few and far between. That lack of monoculture is part of the reason why some were reticent to declare “Choosin’ Texas” the song of the summer when it was clear there was no viable competition (in chart terms, at least). We’re all living different summers at parallel times, with social media feeding back to us only what we want to hear and see. If you care to live in a silo, rent is free.

Does anyone listen to Spotify?! It’s algorithm driven. In general I don’t listen to any “new” country music, so Spotify would never put this in my playlist even if I’m requesting “discover mode”. This says more about our fragmented culture than me personally.

Right - I don't listen to radio, I don't watch TV. This is different from my middle school self living in the early 2000s.

I don't use apps that involve algorithm driven song snippets.

The public spaces I'm in don't have music playing loud enough for me to discern new songs.

God help me I’m going to post about Ella Langley again but the reason that Rolling Stone piece is bad is because it correctly identifies why so many people haven’t heard the song (increasing cultural atomisation) but dismisses that in favour of “people are being bigoted against white southerners”

It's shorthand, often, for liberal politics and a way to separate oneself from anything that could be associated with rural or Southern stereotypes. "I've never heard of 'Choosin' Texas"" is the “I listen to anything but country" of 2026.

Also btw speaking of algorithm driven music maybe Rolling Stones should do an op-ed about how algorithms have become such a problem that yeah people aren't hearing certain music and it's ultimately harmful for both the artists and the listeners. That's an angle they could try for that song
