The modern era is teaching me so many things, including how quickly people will completely forget how to do stuff the way they used to (maps, AllTrails, whatever) as soon as there is a convenient alternative. Even when it is completely wrong.
Chatbots may give credible-sounding advice scraped from Reddit threads and dated YouTube videos—or that could even be fabricated.

The modern era is teaching me so many things, including how quickly people will completely forget how to do stuff the way they used to (maps, AllTrails, whatever) as soon as there is a convenient alternative. Even when it is completely wrong.
I can only do “easy, to a little moderate” trails according to AllTrails app, I have limits but I’m happy with what I have!

using alltrails‘ social aspect to see what trails are and aren’t popular, cross-referencing with other maps is a good place to start. a weekday on a unmaintained trail and you probably won’t see anyone at all

not sure if the issue is alltrails or our phone's altimeter, but alltrails reported two different values for elevation gain for the exact same route, differing by 500' (150 m)

honestly, alltrails is useful for exploring potential trails and tracking activity, but oh man, it definitely can't be trusted to have accurate information about whether anything is actually open, whether two trails really connect, etc.

LOL. Apple Watch has a “you seem to be taking a walk - do you want to start logging it?” feature. You’d think AllTrails could figure out that when your pace is all of a sudden 40 mph, that it should ask you if you want to end the hike.

This is great! It doesn't seem to work on Brave though, the landing page flashes but then disappears. Are you thinking this will be more like alltrails where the trail itself is the focus or more like strava where the individual activity is the focus?

I had the opposite experience of using Claude Opus for this. Did it make mistakes? Yes. Was it better and more comprehensive than what was on Reddit or AllTrails? Yes. At the end of the day, if you're using AI for something important, you should use your brain, too.
