Another speaker is giving a talk on best practices for amblypygid husbandry while wearing a (custom?) whipscorpion dress, incredibly powerful approach

Really happy to be a part of this #InverteFest edition with my Phrynus resinae! Many fossil chelicerates lack paleoarts while others have already dozens of representations, so I thought for this one "fine, I'll do it myself", and for only my second amblypygid it turned out pretty well^^

I tried to feed my big male Phrynus an American cockroach and some cartoon chase antics ensued. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an amblypygid outmaneuvered like this. Good enrichment for the old man, and he did get it eventually, when I wasn’t looking of course

Look at this amazing amblypygid mom who brought all her babies to the jungle bridge building with us!

An amazing amblypygid, I think a small juvenile, with a body barely a cm. long. These are arachnids, but despite being called "whip spiders" or "tailless whip scorpions," they are neither spiders nor scorpions. They have no venom and are harmless unless you're a moth or other bug. 🐙🌿 #arachnids

I wonder what the tiny spikes on his legs are for. they are very rough and hard to pass your finger along the wrong way, so maybe they stick in the throat of birds or herps that try to swallow prey whole.

Today's entry is our first amblypygid! It's also to my knowledge the first paleoart of this miocene species!

Just finished painting this amblypygid. I want to thank and credit @quailinthecity.bsky.social for letting me use their photo as a reference. You can also find them on youtube and insta as arthropod ambassadors

Pretty sure this picture shows me describing the barbed pedipalps of "Bobby" my amblypygid. 🙃

Check out the second photo for a good up-close view of bobby 🥰

Phrynus asperatipes from south of La Paz, Baja California Sur. This was the first amblypygid I've ever seen in the wild! Second photo is a a full body shot that shows the first pair of legs that are sensory in function and give them the name "whip scorpions"

🐙🌿 Vinegaroons are arachnids that, like the Amblypygid I posted yesterday, look fierce but have no venom and are harmless to people. Also like Amblypygids, the 1st pair of legs is long & thin and used not for walking but as antennae. This one in Arizona recently was big, a couple of inches; here's--
