Dispense with tiresome Americanisms. When a good British TV show goes bad we should say that it “adopted the donkey”.

i've been making a concerted effort to re-british my vocabulary and free it from the americanisms i've picked up over the years, but i will *never* spell it "oestrogen"

British English for British Democracy. Politicians who use Americanisms should go to gaol.
Anyone who uses the term 'DEI' in British politics is clearly importing their culture war labels from America. 'EDI' is the much more common version here in my experience. Going to start my campaign for British language for British culture wars.

American characters on British telly are more likely to say these words = these words are Americanisms.
There’s a whole set of words that Brits of A Certain Age wrongly think are Americanisms, and my pet theory is that what unites these words is they are easier for British actors to say in an American accent.
One of the worst cases of historical gaslighting is British people making up the word soccer and then giving shit to anyone who uses it.

I've heard of this too - Americanisms entering Gaeltacht vernacular without touching Hiberno-English on the way.

My father told me that in south Connemara in the 1940s they also referred (when speaking English) to the sidewalk, among other Americanisms. The only people who had seen the trappings of urban life were those who had been to the States and returned.

I continue to think it's a really fascinating trend that there are a bunch of British English pre-war phrases ('soccer' is one, 'movie' is another) that a lot of British people today are now convinced are Americanisms. How did that happen?
Once again, you might not like the word ‘soccer’, but it’s:
a) Not an Americanism; it is a 19th century English private school abbreviation of ‘Association’ rules, much as ‘rugger’ familiarises ‘Rugby’
b) Commonplace and useful in countries where ⚽️ is not the key code of football 🇦🇺 🇮🇪 🇺🇸 etc.
