#americanisms
It’s scary how much Americanisms are wheedling their way in…
Nickel?! Really? 🤔

There are enough baffling Americanisms added to this edition that it’s kind of jarring to read and takes me out of the deep familiarity like tripping over a cat in the middle of the night but still.

It can be less stressful when you remember that many 'Americanisms' actually had their beginnings in the UK & other European countries (the vest for example was a coat before it became shorter & waisted & therefore the waistcoat) it's just language that developed in different ways...

They don’t make sense in English either. I think they’re both Americanisms as well (?)

falling over ignominiously

i'm not sure the uno reverse works because of how ubiquitous americanisms are unfortunately!

Mars-Jones's pompous sounding irritation about Americanisms & other supposed mistakes in the depiction of life at Oxford reads like a McSweeney's parody, but isn't...

They also have a ‘for who’ or ‘for whom’ problem. Suppose it’s a mixture of laziness , stupidity and Americanisms. 🤔

St. Andrews always felt a blend of Scottish, British and European. None really trumped the other imo, but the Americanisms are really all consuming. The tipping, the prices, the shorthand, the insane car culture.

Yeah, I'm guessing this is one of those weird Americanisms.

Why would you pay *before* knowing what the total is? Crazy that that's even an option somewhere.

There this person I follow and her and her family are all English but they all say "mom" and it irritates me so much like WHY are you saying "mOm" ??? Americanisms taking over will be the death of me 💔

Oh yeah. Data as a concept was around long before the integrated circuit came along to blight our lives, although I suspect it was used more in the American military than elsewhere. There's a lot of Americanisms baked into the language of IT.

It was always in the context of eg “if you think you’re getting pudding when you won’t eat your dinner, you’ve got another think coming!”.
My bugbear with Americanisms is “I could care less”. It’s “couldn’t”!! 🙂

I find it to be one of those absolutely stupid americanisms.

Place your hand over your heart?

What are we , 3?

Gtfoh with the bullshit pledging and whole heart holding shit.

Grow up.

updated my various device/browser spellchecks to Canadian English and I'm being slowly shamed into correcting my Americanisms

many Canadians have adopted that american custom, turns my stomach.

And I'll take my hat off, when indoors (or in the presence of the sovereign ....maybe.)

creeping americanisms are the bane of #canada

Either one will be understood! Signed, a Brit in America who often forgets what words are britishisms and what are americanisms. You could blow minds and call it a hoodless hoodie!

Another anachronism in the game, lifts being called elevators. It's a shame that they've put effort into making it look like 96 but yet these Americanisms slip in
September 25, 2026 at 3:47 PM
Yeah 100%, plus a lot of Americanisms about the great depression i think - things werent that bad across the country or the tories wouldn't have won all those elections. It was the era when Metroland was built and radios etc became widespread!

I don't normally prefer Americanisms to standard English, but I quite like 'Fall' for Autumn. It's the opposite verb to Spring, its opposite season, which fits nicely. Plus it has satanic connotations which make it even cooler.

A 4 for me. Definitely a word I knew of and I didn't realise that it was relatively unknown across the pond! Makes up for some of the Americanisms that have caught me out before (and, yes it's realise not realize!😁).

Likewise. The only extraneous word I got was a singular when they wanted the plural!! I expect tomorrow to be a hell hole of Americanisms in retaliation!

i've been making a concerted effort to re-british my vocabulary and free it from the americanisms i've picked up over the years, but i will *never* spell it "oestrogen"

When it was good, there were lots of Americanisms that almost felt like a tease so we let it go. Now we've got people in London talking about a homecoming rally. Like they aren't even trying any more. Did they lock the British writers away?

Words and phrases some people think of as "Americanisms" being things that fell out of style several centuries ago in the u.k but not in the u.s.
September 21, 2026 at 5:21 AM
These examples show the ways in which Americans expect global populations to know "americanisms" regardless of origin. Americanisms are the intricacies of culture (race/class/etc.) unique to the American experience. I get why Black folx would be offended in all of these examples. Was it intentional?
