New preprint 🧬 A 23-residue piece of medin builds an amyloid fibril entirely on its own.

Medin is the most common localized amyloid in humans — it deposits in the aortic wall in virtually everyone over 60, and sits alongside amyloid-β in Alzheimer's vessels.

🧠 A major Cochrane review (April 2026) pooled 17 randomised trials and 20,342 people. Its conclusion: anti-amyloid antibodies make little or no clinically meaningful difference in mild Alzheimer’s. It’s a hard result, so let’s unpack it carefully. 🧵

What does the Lumipulse pTau-217/Beta Amyloid 42 Ratio test look at?
It combines information from:
p-tau217
and
beta-amyloid 42
The result can help identify amyloid pathology associated with Alzheimer’s disease in appropriate clinical settings.

We need a serious chat about biomarkers, the corporatisation of brain health, and the contextualisation of disease modifying drugs and where this places our current understanding of tau and amyloid. In the meantime we must sort out the abuse of unpaid carers.

What are amyloid plaques?
They are deposits involving beta-amyloid protein that can accumulate in the brain and are associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
But amyloid is only one part of the biological picture.
