UPDATE: High Court Judges of Appeal Claudia Claasen and Eileen Rakow have dismissed an appeal by diamond heist accused suspect Joel Angula to release him on bail. Angula, in April 2026, brought forth an application asking the High Court to overturn a decision by the lower Magistrate’s Court to deny him bail. Angula had, amidst several grounds, argued that the magistrate erred in law and in fact, as there was no clear chain of evidence provided to prove that the objects found at his home had indeed been unpolished diamonds. The State alleges that 13 parcels of diamonds worth N$4.8 million were found hidden at Angula’s Khomasdal residence in Windhoek on 19 January 2026, a day after the deadly Namib Desert Diamonds (Namdia) Ltd Pty heist, wherein thieves took off with diamonds worth over N$300 million. Angula, who is a former police officer and a former security officer at Namdia, is charged with multiple counts ranging from murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of uncut diamonds, and two counts of attempted murder. Close to 10 suspects have been arrested in the Namdia robbery to date, with another two suspects, Bino and George Cloete from Keetmanshoop, currently also appealing their denial of bail. The Cloete brothers are siblings of Charles Rhoman, another Namdia security officer who had been arrested in relation to the heist. After allegedly being handed the illicit cash by Rhoman, the Cloete brothers had gone on a livestock and luxury purchasing spree. To date, over N$290 million worth of the stolen diamonds has still not been recovered. Photo: File The post High Court dismisses Angula’s bail appeal appeared first on Informanté.

Cuba says economic restrictions are placing severe pressure on its healthcare system, with thousands of patients, including children, waiting for surgery. At a Windhoek solidarity dinner, Cuba's Ambassador, Sergio Vigoa de la Uz, outlined the healthcare challenges facing the island, while campaign chairperson Helmuth Angula urged continued public support. Behind Cuba's economic crisis are hospital waiting lists, shortages of essential supplies and families struggling to access treatment. Cuba's Ambassador to Namibia says the impact of recent sanctions has reached the country's healthcare system, with children and elderly people among those facing the consequences. The country is also experiencing a rise in infant mortality and a decline in survival rates among children and young people with cancer. "Currently, the surgical waiting list in the country has reached 100,000 patients, 12,000 of whom are children. The sanctions of recent months have impacted international trade, prohibiting even a litre of oil from reaching Cuba, with the consequences this entails for any economy and the terrible impact on the most vulnerable population, especially children and the elderly." The Namibia-Cuba Solidarity Committee launched its fundraising campaign in April, targeting N$5 million for medical supplies and solar energy kits to the health centres. The committee says some medical supplies have already been procured from 1.7 million raised so far, which are expected to be shipped to Cuba soon. However, additional resources are needed to purchase a 20-foot container of solar kits.

A nurse from the United Kingdom, Amigol Pradeep, scooped the 2026 Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award. Held in India, the award celebrates nurses who are advancing the profession and creating meaningful change. The fifth Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award received a record-breaking 134,000 entries from 214 countries. The top ten nurses were from Sweden, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, China, India, Colombia, Papua New Guinea, Nigeria and Namibia. Namibian nurse Josephine Angula was one of them, but it was Dr Amigol Pradeep who emerged as the top nurse, earning recognition for her contribution to healthcare, research and organ donation advocacy. Pradeep stressed that her win is not only a personal milestone but also a recognition of the impact nurses have on patients, families and communities. Although born in Kerala, India, Pradeep has spent more than two decades working in healthcare in the United Kingdom, developing expertise in organ donation and transplantation. Her work has also extended into research, education and advocacy, with a particular focus on encouraging conversations around organ and stem-cell donation. "My personal mission has always been to save as many lives as possible. For families of a patient waiting for a transplant, every day brings uncertainty and hope. Stem cell and organ transplants transform lives. And from my experience, I am confident to say we as nurses are uniquely positioned to educate, advocate, and start these important conversations." Pradeep, whose work has helped register over 10,000 stem cell donors and create life-saving transplants, is using the global attention to encourage more people to consider registering for organ donation. "I urge everyone present here and those listening virtually to raise awareness, start conversations and inspire informed decisions about stem cell donor registration and deceased organ donor registration. I believe the words 'once a nurse, you're always a nurse'. Wherever we are in the world, that calling remains within us." The award-winning nurse is a senior transplant coordinator at King's College Hospital and an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Salford in the United Kingdom.

Namibian nurse Josephine Angula has been named among the top 10 finalists for the 2026 Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award, following more than 134,000 registrations from 214 countries

Namibian nurse Josephine Angula is among the top 10 finalists for the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2026. More than 134 thousand registrations from 214 countries were received. Angula, the Founder and Practice Manager of Bethesda Medical Centre, is the only Namibian among the finalists, which also include nurses from Nigeria, Colombia, China, Sweden, the UK, Saudi Arabia, Papua New Guinea and India. With more than 25 years of experience in nursing, Angula established Betesda Medical Centre in 2002 from a small rented space. She worked independently as a nurse to provide affordable healthcare to underserved communities. The facility has since grown into a comprehensive primary healthcare centre. Angula stated that being selected among the finalists is a achievement she never expected. "I am really overwhelmed, and I am very happy about this occasion because I never, ever dreamed of it. This is a milestone in our nursing profession. I am truly grateful to DM Healthcare in India for organising this platform for nurses globally and for recognising the work that nurses do. In most cases, nurses have a positive impact on the lives of people.” Angula will travel to India for the final stage of the competition, where the finalists will undergo interviews before an international grand jury comprising healthcare experts and policymakers. The overall winner will walk away with the grand title and a 250 thousand US dollar cash prize, while the other finalists will also receive rewards and global recognition for their contributions to healthcare. “In case I win, I am happy to take up the nursing profession globally. I also encourage my national nurses that our work is really recognised globally.” The winner will be announced on the 12th of September at a ceremony at Grand Hyatt Kochi, Bolgatty, in India.
