Ive gotten WAY better at animation by simply switching from Adobe Flash/Animate to tools like AnimationPaper, Rough Animator and TVPaint.
Other programs like Davinci Resolve for editing and Reaper for audio do a pretty good job at compositing.
Leave Adobe. They do not care about you.

Ive gotten WAY better at animation by simply switching from Adobe Flash/Animate to tools like AnimationPaper, Rough Animator and TVPaint.
Other programs like Davinci Resolve for editing and Reaper for audio do a pretty good job at compositing.

Animation-wise, TVPaint has been my go-to. Rough Animator is amazing on the iPad and I hear it even has Android-tablet compatibility. Waaay cheaper than TVPaint as well.

Thanks for such a detailed answer! I’d love to start 2d animation when I feel somewhat stable, but idk what software should I use. I thought something simple like Tahoma. Should I give AnimationPaper a go? Also why gimp/alpaca?

I can't afford useful schools like CalArts or Chapman U so I'm thinking about getting AnimationPaper or Moho and teaching *myself* to animate. ToonBoom is still a subscription and I refuse to pay subscriptions for anything, industry standard or no.
