we really need a cute common word for anostraca besides fairy "shrimp" because I keep having to explain to people that this shrimp has nothing to do with the shrimp you order in a restaurant. like when I say "the shrimp have two penises"

not to say that "clam shrimp" or "fairy shrimp" are particularly useful or accurate common names, they're kind of eh, but almost no one would be able to follow anything I said if I went around saying "anostraca"

why are Linderiella shrimp distributions always like That

Calling all SFF writers with an emphasis on solarpunk and cli-fi futures:

You heard the Mossworm! Anostraca is looking for love. Will you consider adding fairy shrimp to a tale you tell about the world we're struggling to sustain?

(And hey, where fiction-writers go, maybe researchers will follow!)
no one wants my friends the fairy shrimp included in their science. the bug people tell me to hit the road with my non-insect, the crustacean people are too busy with the entire ocean. who will make a home for my friend peepo

Wait, we can just randomly post #macroinvertebrates here??
Meet my beloved fairy shrimp Anostraca

Let's talk about fairies & enchanted rocks in Texas.

Specifically, let's talk about the fairy shrimp ("Lone Star Sea Monkeys"!) that live in vernal pools at the top of Enchanted Rock near Fredericksburg, TX.

We'll start with why Enchanted Rock is enchanted.

Fairy shrimp (Branchiopoda: Anostraca)
oohh, #taxonomistappreciationday again. Hi, I wander around and collect crustaceans out of temporary freshwater. I'm not affiliated & I have no resources besides what I buy myself, so I don't really assess whether or not I'm finding new species, I just document everything. Found this a few days ago

I’ve recently learned about fairy shrimp aka desert shrimp and this would be a wonderful time to find some! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anostraca

Oh if you're in the northeast then yeah, March is usually a better bet, but it's about the rain more than the temp. Sometimes I just search iNat for "Anostraca" and see what's around

Fairy shrimp (Anostraca)
Only one pond in my shrimp circuit got enough rain for them to hatch, and of course there's no rain expected for the next week, so these were all destined to die as infants. Their natural way of life involves a lot of random chance and mass death

Check inaturalist for "Anostraca" in your area, often you can just go to the same place someone else found something and find it again

The Santa Rosa fairy shrimp were abundant in the large vernal pool at the Santa Rosa Plateau today!

—especially interested in the Devonian lately. All that new life on land. Now I get to learn about ponds, too. Such fun!

Vernal Pool Invertebrates
Anostraca are recognized by having no external shell, two compound eyes, and two sets of antennae. Their abdomen terminates with a pair of tail-like cercopods.

The density of invertebrates in vernal pools is insane. Hundreds of thousands of little crustaceans (fairy shrimp and copepods) that are only alive for a few weeks. Insane that these habitats are not legally protected.

Pennsylvania is very much not California but regardless, this page has been a nice summary of vernal pool creatures

Oh ok, thanks, I'll have a read! Honestly though, this was more just a personal observation of mine. There's a type of anostraca called Branchinecta gigas which looks quite anomalocaris-like. It's also predatory.
