Maybe I'm an authoritarian at heart, but this is something (along with illegal number plates) I'd come down hard on. Use ANPR as much as we can. Make sure it gets enforced.
Not so fun facts about uninsured drivers: they kill and maim a lot of people.

What this view misses is that these cameras aren’t distributed equally they’re also disproportionately placed in Black and poor communities and used to monitor who is and isn’t leaving those communities. This is partly due to the fact the built infrastructure there is such that people are reckless.
okay fine if we’re doing speed camera discourse, here’s my take as a Brit/american: the British system of almost entirely fixed location cameras at high risk points is much better at improving safety and less discriminatory than cops with radar guns looking for Black folk to pull over

Almost all petrol stations have ANPR cameras.
Instead of protecting shareholder dividends they should be used to save lives.
A driver should be unable to get fuel unless the ANPR detects that the vehicle is taxed, MOT’d, insured and the driver has a valid license.

Some twat with a towbar reversed into my car. The only damage was to the front number plate. This has somehow stopped ANPR cams from reading it but it's still easily read by humans. A pain in car parks but I haven't paid a congestion charge since.

ANPR is a very reliable piece of technology!
It is sad to see a successful & entirely uncontroversial bollard at Stean Street being removed. When Councils use ANPR they turn a fact of life into a ‘moneymaking scheme’ that generates animosity & has inferior traffic management results

Certainly was the case with roads. Trials were done back in 2004 that showed using ANPR to spot and intercept stolen/untaxed/unMOTd/uninsured vehicles helped prevent/detect more serious crime by "denying criminals use of the road".

Hospital had carpark barrier issues. One day the barrier disappeared. Assumed it was broken, drove out - under 20 mins anyway, so free. Next time I saw people queuing to pay. Shouted "no need, barrier's broken," It wasn't, they'd just switched to ANPR. Sorry if you got a fine.

The repeatedly vandalised ANPR filter at Sturt Street in Hoxton has (finally) been replaced with a fire gate. Let’s see if this now works…
