The Met Office has warned that a "polar vortex" could cause sudden frigid weather across Britain. The polar vortex is a fast-moving network of winds high in Earth's atmosphere that can influence weather across the UK. ### In 2018, Anticyclone Hartmut, also known as the Beast from the East, brought widespread snowfall and unusually low temperatures across the UK due to a polar vortex shift. Although the vortex is above the North Pole, its disturbance can cause a "sudden stratospheric warming" (SSW). ### TRENDING Stories Videos Your Say ### Despite its name, an SSW does not warm the Earth's surface. It instead refers to the temperature high up in the stratosphere, which rapidly warms by as much as 50 degrees in just a few days Weeks later, it creates blocks of high pressure which can hit Europe with long spells of dry, cold weather. The Met Office said signs of polar vortex disturbance are exceptionally early this year and may be caused by the El Niño in the tropical Pacific. ### ### ### El Niño is a weather phenomenon marked by warm sea-surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific. This year's has been dubbed a "super" El Niño and has already broken sea surface temperature records. Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Aidan McGivern, explained how seemingly unconnected weather phenomena influence each other. The Met Office said it was a good example of "teleconnection", where atmospheric changes in one part of the world influence weather patterns thousands of kilometres away. But an instance of SSW does not automatically guarantee a big British freeze. It can take between two and six weeks for its effects to be seen, the Met Office said. ### ### Much depends on where high-pressure areas form, with blocking in the north encouraging easterly winds, while high pressure to the west makes northerly winds more likely. Historically, an SSW increases the chance of colder weather in Britain.
