I’m pleased to say I have been elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, so I am now officially an Antiquary and have to have a Cabinet of Curiosities, embark on ill-advised investigations of barrows, and write ghost stories 🪔 👻

I usually just call it ‘Victorian antiquary style’ but I’ll open this one to the peanut gallery
@oldenoughtosay.com Is there a concise way of describing Victorian-style make-shit-up as needed?

I love it that Edward V reigned for 78 days but some Victorian antiquary still managed to produce an edition of documents relating to his reign

Illustration from Theatrum Chemicum Britannicum (1652). Compiled and edited by antiquary extraordinaire Elias Ashmole, it is perhaps the seminal volume of English alchemical literature. More here: https://publicdomainreview.org/collection/theatrum-chemicum

What exactly is an Antiquary? 🤔

The term ‘antiquary’ first appeared in England in the 16th century and referred to anyone who studied or collected the textual or material remains of the past.

Amusing little initial D, from Robert Sheringham’s ‘De Anglorum gentis origine’ (Cambridge, 1670). The copy belonging to Lincolnshire lawyer & antiquary Maurice Johnson, founder of the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society. From my shelves.
