The capstone on Cefn Bryn in Gower had already been called Arthur's discarded pebble when John Williams wrote to the antiquary Edward Lhuyd in 1693. That is the first record, and it was settled even then.

TIL that M.R. James Ghost Stories of an Antiquary (which included 'Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad') and Lafcadio Hearn's Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things both came out in 1904.

Big year for ghost stories!

Look close, but not too closely. M.R. James’s The Mezzotint is Gothic horror about a dull engraving that changes the more it is studied. The scholars who have it in their possession research it—yet still have no explanation for the phenomenon en.wikisource.org/wiki/Ghost_S... #GothicMoodShortStories

among the offerings were, remarkably, novels by Burney, Richardson, Smollett, Hogg, Scott, Radcliffe, and Sterne (I love that volume one--of a 2 vol set--of Tristram Shandy seems now to be missing, presumably read to death long before the library was re-opened as part of the Lead Mining museum.)

Outside Boroughbridge, three monoliths are called the Devil's Arrows - a name first recorded in John Aubrey's 1687 papers. The antiquary Camden described them in 1586 and gave no legend. A fourth stone went into a bridge.

Emperor Frederick III was the first Holy Roman Emperor of the Habsburg dynasty, and this video is about the extraordinary tomb he was buried in in Vienna. It has survived remarkably well and, in recent years, modern technology has revealed some of its hidden secrets.

Interesting that you refer to Scott as an 'antiquary'. His novel 'The Antiquary' is an exceptionally funny and affectionate portrait of one such figure.

Something I should probably address at this point, another ghost story comic anthology has just been released. Ghost Stories of an Antiquary came out recently, and it looks great. It has some fantastically talented creators involved, and I’m looking forward to reading it.
