The apse is the curved end: most French cathedrals have one: few English ones do.
ALL English ones with apses have a screen blocking the view somewhat.
For ex, Canterbury (left below) has an apse, but a massive stone screen.

Hales, probably the best known of the thatched round-towered churches in Norfolk. Largely 12th Century, though apses are unusual in East Anglia, the east window added perhaps a century later. Now in the care of @visitchurches.bsky.social, as is neighbouring Heckingham. #SteepleSaturday

Great to catch the excavations at the only Roman villa recorded in NE Wales so far near Rossett, Wrexham. The 2nd-4th c. main building is badly damaged by ploughing & robbing of masonry, but the building to the SW is better preserved with intact floors & a heating system. Both had apses added on.

#MosaicMonday - The 4th century AD Great Hunt Mosaic at the Villa Romana del Casale in Piazza Armerina in Sicily. The mosaic decorates a 60 m long corridor with apses at both ends. It shows the capture of animals and their subsequent transport by ship to Rome for the venationes.

we knew vaguely where we were going and set out, i personally recall actively refusing to meet anyone's eyes, watching their legs to guide my movements, thank god for old european buildings' side doorway apses because we had to take several breaks to gather ourselves before pressing on
