…Aramaic, and Ancient Greek and have done for 25+ years.

I’m getting rusty now, by my God! It was never more clear that crazy foo who was so nasty, had never even cracked a book. That’s the state of some Jewish people, or people who self-identify as practicing Judaism. A woman who believes in…

My first Syriac book was this, and I've been interested in Aramaic in all its varieties ever since.

Mary Calls Me Maestro

Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher).

Ok legit but the problem is it only has 5 vowels and I firmly believe in ā (which I pronounce like a Persian). I can accept that Jewish Aramaic had only six vowels and merged long and short e, but I cannot accept the loss of my favorite vowel in the world.

in ramban’s introduction to genesis he cites syriac sapientia salomonis and translates it into hebrew

note that by ספר מתורגם he means simply “aramaic book”

rambaN on deut. 21:14 cites syriac judith under the name “the scroll of shoshan” (because he probably had an apocrypha compilation that started with the book of susanna)

ignore the vowels, they were added by a jew who did not know syriac and vocalized it as if it were aramaic

i like judeo-syriac, which is just syriac transcribed in hebrew script but is not the same thing as aramaic

Is she aware that Hebrew has used the Aramaic alephbet for the past 2500 years?

Dunno if Aram-Damascus was a "brutal empire", I think the alephbet is the only thing they're known for. It just works better with pen-on-parchment, while paleo-Hebrew and Phoenecian worked best with stylus-on-clay.

I criticise modern Hebrew only because Aramaic was RIGHT THERE and has like every word imaginable attested already. Also I hate the r. But these are like dumb personal opinions that I don’t try to make seriously.

I hate when layfolk criticise language because they don’t *believe* they are layfolk.

The village speaks Western Armenian, not Western Aramaic 😄 I wish there were Aramaic-speaking islands in Lebanon or Latakia for example 😢 It would've been very interesting to see how they compare with Maaloula, but alas.

Fun fact: this specific controversy became a lasting schism due to one side formalizing their theology in Syriac/Edessan Aramaic and using terms that did not map nearly to the Greek terms used by the other sides.

Really? That’s incredible. Are there any Aramaic-speaking villages around the area?

I'm none of the above dude
Aramaic and Semitic has been used way before America existed and before Christianity existed

Interesting. Surprising how little attention Turkmen of Syria/Iraq receive linguistically. Jews from Kirkuk saw Arabic as a Jewish language in town because Muslims around them spoke ‘Turki’, but I rarely hear the language described in detail in an Iraqi context (comp. to Arabic, Aramaic & Kurdish).

Question for you all: I have a 75-minute video of me chanting in Hebrew and Aramaic, and an ODT file that includes all the text in it. Anyone have any recommendations for a good open-source aligner I could use to make subtitles more easily?

The traditional Aramaic greeting for the day is פִּתְקָא טָבָא piṯqa ṭava, literally "good note" — i.e. "may your year's fate be emended for good."

Some will say it in Yiddish — אַ גוט קוויטל a gut kvitl, literally "a good lil' receipt"

....... Before Hengel's work, scholars sharply divided

the ancient Jewish world into "Palestinian Judaism"

(seen as isolated, conservative, and Hebrew/Aramaic-speaking)

& "Diaspora Judaism"

(seen as Greek-speaking and deeply assimilated).

it's such a good Sukkot movie, if anyone is interested

it's called "Ushpizin" which is Aramaic for "guests" (& in the Zohar a most mysterious & auspicious word😋)

Syriac/aramaic writing may be the most beautiful of scripts.
Tbh imo it's a tight contest between the liney scripts: Arabic, Sanskrit, Syriac.
