It's been a long time coming, but delighted to say that the first major output from my Royal Society Fellowship is now published. 🙂

The authors identify conserved gene networks across fern and angiosperm reproductive development, including between the sporophyte ovule and the fern gametophyte egg-chamber. Repurposing of this netwo...

🌱🧬Seed evolution may have repurposed fern gene networks. Ovule genes are enriched in post-fertilization fern archegonia, some also in sporophyll primordia.

A shift in expression may have helped shape the first seeds. #plantscience @seedrevolutionlab.bsky.social www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Prepping to exit the bad place & am heartbroken. I shared so many plant amazing posts by other plant folks over there. Just rewatched a microscopy video about prepping Marchantia for archegonium pics. So beautiful and so useful. I learned so much over there that I've shared with my students. Ugh.

However, when plants with very early embryos were examined after fertilisation, the embryos lacked expression while surrounding inactive eggs/zygotes stained strongly. Expression was therefore absent from the one egg of several that eventually becomes the single embryo/sporophyte of the moss... 9/

The spores fall to the ground. Again when conditions are favorable, the spores grow into a gametophyte. This is a postage stamp size plant, that is sort of heart shaped, still haploid.

Two organs grow at opposite ends, archegonium (eggs) and antheridium (sperm).

Just one small issue: it's archegonium, not archeogonium.

wiki: The prothallus develops from a germinating spore. It is a short-lived and heart-shaped structure typically 2–5 millimeters wide, with a number of rhizoids growing underneath, and the sex organs: archegonium (female) and antheridium (male). Appearance varies quite a lot between species.
