I thought I had a vague idea of Hellenistic Apulia, but this new tomb painting surpasses all expectations. Seized from the infamous Symes collection, it is now on display in Canosa. Its vivid colours and striking scene are breathtaking. #Archaeology 🏺

Nestled in this report about the Florida state court judge who ruled for Trump in a big defamation case and then immediately got nominated to a federal judgeship: He apparently also met personally with Trump, which is, for district court nominations, pretty unusual www.politico.com/news/2025/06...

Ed Artau met with staff in the office of Rick Scott to angle for the nomination less than two weeks after Trump’s election last fall. In the midst of his interviews, Artau was part of a panel of judges that ruled in Trump’s favor in the president’s case against members of the Pulitzer Prize Board.

This would be why the Senate has the power to advise & consent on presidential nominations www.politico.com/news/2025/06...
A judge sided with Trump. Behind the scenes, he was lobbying for a nomination.
Ed Artau was already meeting with Senate staff about securing a nomination to the federal bench when he sided with Trump in a case, according to a new Senate disclosure obtained by POLITICO.

"Judge Artau seems eager to facilitate Trump’s unconstitutional antics in exchange for a job. That’s far from the level of integrity that the Rules of Professional Conduct demand," @seth-stern.bsky.social said.

@jaywillis.net: "In previous administrations, people who wanted to become judges would not risk doing what Artau did here, because they understood that pulling stunts like this one would invite hard questions that they could answer truthfully or persuasively, but not both."
The Senate will vote this evening to confirm Ed Artau to the Southern District of Florida. Artau had a Trump case pending before him while lobbying for this nomination, and eventually ruled in Trump's favor (and wrote a separate Trumpian concurrence).

Trump views judicial nominations as prizes to dole out to his political allies. Ambitious Republican lawyers are making sure he notices their efforts.

Kennedy moves onto the next nominee, Edward Artau.

Q: What's Title 6 of the Civil Rights Act?

Artau: "That people are treated equally in any places that they would be."

Kennedy: In all cases?

I want to stress that Trump’s first two slates of judicial nominees have been nothing like the Federalist Society picks from his first term. They are Trump loyalists who got the nod by auditioning with some grand gesture to prove their bona fides. It’s part pay to play, part spoils system.

A Florida judge, Ed Artau, who is hearing Trump's libel lawsuit against the Pulitzer Prizes, used a routine ruling as an opportunity to call for the overturning of the Supreme Court's decision in NYT v. Sullivan.

He is the latest federal or state judge to join this campaign against Sullivan.

Yes, Artau is not qualified to serve as a judge. But Chuck, much going on in the world today, and your conduct demonstrates a total lack of leadership. Time for you to resign, and open up for seat to someone from a new generation.
