My MC, Eckhart, starts the story fundamentally incapable of using magic and manipulating asmer, and this block is the outward manifestation of his character arc over the course of the book. He has to learn to have faith in himself and his own agency (and consequences) before he can progress.
Hey there, #AugustWorldbuilders! We've been talking about magic in a vacuum for a while. Now tell me how your characters interact with it. Does you MC use magic? Other side characters or the villain? What's the relationship with magic like?

Eowyrms and the dragons they become, are born in Asmer fields regularly reinforced by rituals and experiences and shared communal intent. The repeated patterns become a circuit and container within the asmer, animated by the intent carried within. In a real way, they are living dreams, our own gods.
#AugustWorldbuilders, are there any entities associated with magic in your world? For instance, Gods associated with magic, spirits, animal familiars, summoned creatures, or anything you can think of?

Asmerists come in two dominant flavors: Affaraon-trained mages, and the Meisters and Augurs of the Church Ascendant. They use the same magical foundation, but approach it differently and use different tools to get into the required trance state to manipulate asmer.
#AugustWorldbuilders, we're talking about magic some more! What are magic-users called in your world, and how are they trained? How are users of magic treated in your world, in general? Is it a legal practice?

Magic in my WIP is definitely soft. It's manipulating the energy field created as a byproduct of sentient experiences (qualia), and is linked to memory and intent. These Asmer fields can be primed and triggered in a cascade, thus "spells". There is older "true magic", but it's...different.
Hello, friends and #AugustWorldbuilders! In this second half of August, the last two full weeks will both be dedicated to MAGIC. I have a bunch of questions for you to think about, yap about, and develop a magic system (or lack thereof). Today: briefly tell us how it works. Or how yours is different

I needed a term for the energy behind my magic in Afterlife Debt, and "mana" is both inaccurate and is also appropriated, so I wanted something else. I went digging into proto-indo-european roots , and found "(s)mer", meaning something like "to remember". Threw on an "A" and got "Asmer".
#MayWorldbuilders, tell me a word or phrase that you created for your world. Was it made to fit in your conlang? Or is it based on English (or whatever language you're writing in)?

My dragons are born through a unique and dramatic process, but the result can vary depending on the density of asmer in their rebirth-site. Sometimes they are forced to incarnate physically, and that can be a possession of a corpse, unborn animal, or living creature. All of which causes mutations.
#AprilWorldbuilders, this one might be a bit hard, but interpret it as you will. Does your fantasy species have any biological interactions with other species (sapient or non)? This could include symbiosis or parasitism, for example. Or perhaps they're capable of mating with another species?

Keusana's dragons have the usual spread of senses (if their constructed or chosen body does), but their dominant sense is one rooted in the core mechanic/magic of the setting, the asmer fields; the tree-ring-memory-like energy field byproduct of conscious sentient experience. It's info-rich for them
Hello, #AprilWorldbuilders! Does your fantasy species/race have any different or unique senses? Are any of the usual five senses different for them? Do they have any other senses that aren't usually talked about in humans?

All magic has the same origin and operating principles, but the Church Ascendant and the Mages of Affaraon utilize it differently. The manipulation of asmer, an energy field byproduct of conscious sentient experiences, is what constitutes magic. Mages use their own, clerics pull from the environment
#Febchantment Day 15
This week we're discussing magic's role in the culture. So let's start with different approaches to magic.
Are there multiple different types of magic, or different philosophies? Are there multiple schools or disciplines? How do they differ?

When Asmer(astronomer) and Stary(star) first meet, Asmer can hardly believe how many hours slip away as she gazes at Stary. Amused by such gentle curiosity, Stary allows her to linger, content to be admired.
