In mature Iranian subsurface deposits, sudden shut-ins trigger asphaltene/paraffin deposition, fines migration, water coning, and pore collapse underground — permanently reducing permeability and recoverable reserves so the wells effectively destroy their own long-term productivity.

*Technically* they've done this kind of thing before (the Maya Exchange), but it wasn't great.

If heavy Venezuelan crude were introduced into a cavern containing existing light or medium crude, the paraffin-asphaltene incompatibility would drop an insoluble, tarry sludge layer to the bottom.

lmao these guys have no idea about the physical realities. it's all just numbers on a spreadsheet to them. Venezuela produces sour crude that precipitates asphaltene and paraffin sludge in unheated storage caverns, which clogs the extraction wells. viscosity also drops rapidly: like pumping mollases
Burgum on Venezuela: "President Trump, the deal that was just cut recently, will allow us to refill the strategic petroleum reserve perhaps as low as $30 or $40 a barrel."

You know what would be funny? If they send Orinoco heavy high density, full of asphaltene. Which is actually what they can actually deliver now…

How long does the carbon in the bitumen stay in the asphalt in the road surface?

I am no expert but it seems to be quite a long time. It seems like the bitumen oxidizes into asphaltene, not gaseous CO2.

Are they claiming carbon credits for that?

Went to a job site as they were placing asphalt and they were dumping it in a way that was making a ridiculous amount of smoke, so I’m now covered in a microscopically thin layer of asphaltene, catching whiffs of it.

Polymer Additives with Gas Barrier and Anti‐Aging Properties Made from Asphaltenes via Supercritical Ethanol
Explore the untapped potential of asphaltene, an undesired byproduct of petroleum processing. Conventional disposal methods (burning, landfilling) pose environmental challenges. Discover how supercritical ethanol technology offers a scalable solution, transforming asphaltenes into innovative polymer additives with enhanced gas barrier and anti-aging properties, thereby enabling the valorization of asphaltene and mitigating environmental impact. Abstract Asphaltene is often regarded as an undesirable by-product of petroleum processing, possesses vast reserves with little market value. The typical routes of consuming asphaltene, namely burning and landfilling, pose significant environmental challenges. In this study, low-value asphaltene is converted into high-value ethylated carbon clusters (ECC) using a supercritical ethanol technique. The resulting ECC powder demonstrates promising properties for high density polyethylene (HDPE) composite applications. The effects of incorporating ECC on the mechanical, gas barrier, and anti-aging properties of the composite are investigated. Results show that a 1 wt.% ECC led to a 4.2% and 43.5% increase in tensile strength and elongation at break, a reduction of 45.8% and 30.7% in oxygen and carbon dioxide permeability. Furthermore, ECC exhibits effective UV spectrum absorption and conversion in the wavelength range of 400–600 nm, providing protection against UV spectrum damage to HDPE. The incorporation of ECC not only enhances the properties of polymer composites but also sequesters carbon within the polymer matrix, enabling the valorization of asphaltene while mitigating environmental impact.
