#astro101
Well it was the start of cosmology topic in Astro101 today and I am dissatisfied with how I explained the expansion of the universe. Any one have a favourite demo? 🔭🧪👩‍🔬

Covered this not being a thing and also a “Moon, Jupiter and Venus will make a smiley face” meme in Astro101 yesterday. Venus not even above the horizon or near the moon at the time they suggested.

We are so happy to see @juliaastro.org leading a #JuliaLang workshop at #AAS247!

Our inaugural #Astro101 for @unistellar.bsky.social #smart #telescope users introduced 30 participants to #Julia for data analysis — showing how #smartscope users can explore #astronomy with professional-grade tools.🧪🔭
Would you or your colleague like to improve the performance of your data analysis? Then please join us at our @julialang.org workshop at the 247th @aas.org meeting on Jan 3, 2026 in Phoenix, AZ. The regular registration deadline is Nov 7.

I borrowed and edited a reading/writing/discussion assignment from @jillianscudder.com for my #Astro101 class on claims of 3I/ATLAS being alien tech... and it went WELL! 🔭🎢

A few years ago when I tried this, it flopped. All the news media was still too deferential to the "Harvard astronomer" (1/n)

This collected works from Galileo contains examples of his observations of the moons of Jupiter orbiting the planet, and drawings of sunspots. Highly educational to discuss with astro101 students. 🔭👩‍🔬🎢🧪

Got to tell my Astro101 class about the time that our virtual star party almost discovered a supernova...

You can see it here at the top left of the galaxy, four days before it was officially discovered by a group of undergrads! www.youtube.com/live/ePOrciu...

I remember a fellow grad student seriously asking whether "there is no god" should be a learning goal of astro101. And while I don't recall his exact words, he specifically referenced Abrahamic/monotheistic religions but clearly meant Christian

You two were the only reason I was able to continue teaching that Astro101 class in 2023.

Thank you both ❤️

Yeah. I didn't realize how vast the gulf between common understanding and what I thought was common understanding was until I TAed an Astro101 course. Intuition just doesn't work well for weird lights moving across the sky.

I'm going to share some behind the scenes photos from film and tv stuff I've worked on for the next week or so.

This is a fun promo shot I did with the UofA's Astro101 MOOC team and their big ass telescope at the university's observatory.

Of course I work at a place where a class of 40 is big. I’d be much stricter if I had hundreds (I’ve even heard of Astro101 with over 1000 students).
