(like, yes, there are technically ATSC3 1080p feeds up right now, but they are encrypted, and just upscaled 1080i/720p anyway)

What a drag you HAD the right wiring, but it was done okie-joe in the wrong way, so unusable for this. We just use the OTA for networks and MeTV cartoons, but if they work out ATSC3 so it isn't screwed with encryption, we'll probably add an HDHomerun to record the OTA stuff we want.

watching the 49ers game over ATSC3 over the air and it's in Dolby Atmos for some reason, which is fucking WEIRD for football

the funniest possible thing would be if trump forces cable companies to bring back CableCard and forces broadcasters to stop encrypting ATSC3

On Global Accessibility Awareness Day, May 21, Bridge encourages everyone to learn about the ATSC 3.0 NextGen TV standards. As television becomes more interactive & personalized, it’s essential that accessibility be a part of this new broadcast experience. #GAAD #ATSC3 #A11Y

OTA TV has a rocky road ahead: ATSC3 has a massive chicken-and-egg problem. Will the FCC mandate it in new TVs? Will DRM kill it?

That, and everything else we saw and discussed at NAB 2026, in today's Geerling Engineering video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEP3...
The broadcast industry is changing in 2026

This patent expires in 2028. I can’t see why any TV maker would ship an ATSC3 tuner compatible tv to the USA anytime before then.
Also, given that the FCC is going to ban any product tested for FCC certification in a Chinese laboratory, new models of any tv may not ship here any time soon.

ATSC3, the blu-ray of OTA (derogatory)
March 19, 2026 at 2:15 AM
oh, no, not this time. it'll get you there faster, if you care about that, but the video quality OTA is trash now compared to Paramount+ (though you do trade the 5.1 audio) unless you have a non-encrypted full-bandwidth ATSC3 station, which there are... maybe two of ? in the country?

This, plus DRM on ATSC3 channels, and the fact that young people seldom if ever watch broadcast TV, is why I think network affiliates are living on borrowed time. They will soon be as irrelevant as Ma Bell. The locals don't care that nobody wants to see their weather nerds on endless repeat!

As yesterday was the Comments deadline for the latest FCC ATSC3 NextGenTV proposal, there were a lot of filings from major groups yesterday including this 43 page filing from Weigel Broadcasting which calls out all the issues with the big broadcast groups plans.

The FCC is taking comments on Docket 16-142 UNTIL JAN 20, 2026. Tell them to STOP the DRM and keep TV free for everyone. #savefreetv #atsc3 #stopdrm #fcc

Just saw this article about the possibility of ASTC1 switching to MPEG4 during the transition to ATSC3. Interesting quote from Weigel Broadcasting about how many people's TV's can't receive MPEG4.

... This will especially happen where Station groups have a duopoly where one Station goes ATSC3 while the other goes ATSC1 with MPEG4 to carry all the Channels from the other station. It still means older non-smart TV won't be able to decode the video.
October 28, 2025 at 7:08 PM
The way I see this working out based on the proposal is, at least for the now, more of the big corporate Stations will transition to ATSC3 while some Stations will stay in ATSC1, but transition from MPEG2 to H264/AVC/MPEG4 to allow them to carry the Channels from the Stations that go ATSC3. ...

Nothing like having to tell your tuner to rescan because #atsc tuners are too smart to just lock onto anything and show whatever you got, but too stupid to figure out where the channels are on the fly...

And #atsc3 aka #nextgentv is 100% horseshit and I'm kinda glad to see the viewing public […]

... possibly make MPEG4 mandatory for ATSC1 stations that choose not to transition to ATSC3. FCC also seeks comments about concerns related to the DRM, Signature Signing requirements, and theA3SA. There is also a whole section seeking comments about ATSC3 tuner mandate and MVPDs I haven't read.

The FCC must disallow DRM over ATSC3 and they must have a longer transition period than what the NAB wants. But at this point, it seems like lobbyists will get what they want as long as they "submit" to this administration and censor speech.
