oh, no, not this time. it'll get you there faster, if you care about that, but the video quality OTA is trash now compared to Paramount+ (though you do trade the 5.1 audio) unless you have a non-encrypted full-bandwidth ATSC3 station, which there are... maybe two of ? in the country?

The way I see this working out based on the proposal is, at least for the now, more of the big corporate Stations will transition to ATSC3 while some Stations will stay in ATSC1, but transition from MPEG2 to H264/AVC/MPEG4 to allow them to carry the Channels from the Stations that go ATSC3. ...

no. my ATSC3 is encrypted, though the HDR on ATSC3 stations is "fake" (it's the standard NBC feed with HDR added on top)

1080p is not a broadcast format, all Fox and Disney (ABC, ESPN, etc) have been 720p since the dawn of HD, and all Viacom/Comcast (CBS, NBC, etc) have been 1080i. It will be years before any network broadcasts in anything else, though there are ATSC3 broadcasts that are upscaled versions.

... This will especially happen where Station groups have a duopoly where one Station goes ATSC3 while the other goes ATSC1 with MPEG4 to carry all the Channels from the other station. It still means older non-smart TV won't be able to decode the video.

What a drag you HAD the right wiring, but it was done okie-joe in the wrong way, so unusable for this. We just use the OTA for networks and MeTV cartoons, but if they work out ATSC3 so it isn't screwed with encryption, we'll probably add an HDHomerun to record the OTA stuff we want.

ATSC3 allows for 4K broadcasting and it will presumably come along someday; a few stations have already done it.

technically that depends on your local station but unless something has changed very recently every atsc3 station is just deinterlacing what goes out over ATSC1 to 1080p

ATSC3 is HEVC, and in fact my local ABC is already up on the lighthouse with an ATSC3 feed, but it's encrypted which should absolutely not be allowed for free OTA TV but our FCC hasn't gotten around to addressing it & won't if Harris doesn't win in November
