Feels like another #AttackOnNature moment.

So....it's back to bash the Newts and Bats. Should we bring back the #attackonnature campaign @tonydartmoor.bsky.social ?
January 23, 2025 at 10:05 AM
It must be time for the environmental sector to come together again to fight responses like this?

#AttackOnNature 2.0?
Stop worrying about bats and newts? No Rachel Reeves MP – start worrying about the future of our economy if we tear down the nature it depends on.

Nature isn’t a blocker; it’s the foundation of growth.

1. Because this issue is critical, but has received remarkably little coverage, here's a thread pulling out the key themes from my article yesterday, on the Planning and Infrastructure Bill, which puts decades of environmental protections to the torch. 🧵 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
Labour’s great nature sellout is the worst attack on England’s ecosystems I’ve seen in my lifetime | George Monbiot
The horrifying planning bill, which rips up environmental protections, was drafted with CEOs in mind. We know because Keir Starmer told us, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

The vast fire on #Dartmoor should alert us to the ecological disaster there. This should not be a fire-prone landscape. Were it not for the elimination of trees by grazing, the vegetation type on the high moor would be temperate rainforest, which is extremely hard to burn. But only specks remain.

Different Government, same anti-nature vibes.

It's becoming increasingly clear that (once again) Labour does not "get" nature and Starmer himself see's those who care about nature as "blockers" and "NIMBYs".

Heading fast towards #attackonnature territory.

The best comparator is with the Truss regime, with its #attackonnature.
But Truss lasted less than a lettuce. We are stuck with this lot til 2029.
Whether it’s Aarhus, habitats, planning, Starmer’s bonfire of regulations, both the rhetoric and the reality of Labour on nature are simply dire.

Well done to all who campaigned for the Bill and to @rozsavagemp.bsky.social for introducing it.

But shame on Starmer and Reeves, who just don't get it, do they? Will this Government actually be worse than the Tories on nature?

📣 The requirement for developers to offset environmental damage done on sites as a condition of planning is THE MINIMUM we should expect.

On one level it's quite funny to see just how wrong AI can be, but it's alarming that what it's produced looks plausible (superficially), to the ignorant.

And consider the Reeves/Starmer #attackonnature: many will believe their Bats/Newts claims to be true, bolstered by this sort of work.

The sitting of the UK Parliament which ended yesterday has been a mixed bag for archaeology and the environment, including the threat to the polluter pays and precautionary principles in planning & the #AttackOnNature but it ends with good news as local Historic Environment Records become statutory.

Further evidence that despite all the economic troubles, and the #attackonnature, the Labour government is trying to rectify some of the trashing of society that occurred under the Tories.

The public stance, repeated again by Rachel Reeves in this morning's speech, is the same shorthand show of disdain for "Newts and Bats" which led to the collapse of the attempt to loosen planning rules by Liz Truss through provoking the successful #AttackOnNature campaign.

Well done @CraigBennett3 on @BBCr4today soon after 0730 (just now). There's no doubt this damaging change in policy is coming and the house builders have won the lobbying battle.
