While in Springfield last night, I polled the audience and asked how many of them early voted. Out of almost 150 people, almost every hand went up.

Taking an attitude of smug superiority towards your audience is generally a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy in that its very easy to be superior to an audience with nobody in it
You have to be familiar enough with the genre you're writing that you don't just show up all "heh, bet you slop-eaters have never seen anything like this: [unoriginal work derivative of the most mainstream entries in the genre]" and you also have to bring in ideas from outside the genre.
