I needed to make a new track for tomorrow's plugin video so instead I combined Venus Theory's awful-speaker with the classic Auratone so it's as convenient to use as Venus's tiny portable speaker is :)

Tada! Now I have a 'mix check' speaker which uses a very decent Class D tiny amp and decent battery charging and volume controls, but it drives a real Auratone (the reissue, not a vintage one) with the mono signal you'd want to use. Very convenient, and it'll do Bluetooth if you want, too :)

さてAuratone 5Cを使っているわけですが、定番でありながら人によって評価が分かれる理由が少しわかった気がする。
というのもセッティング位置にかなり敏感で、特に高さ方向が合ってないと低音がまったく聞こえず、シャカシャカしたラジオくさい音になる。
高さを合わせて少し内側に向けると、キレの良いタントンという低音が聞こえてきて定位もビシッと決まるので、リスニングに使うなら高さが可変できるスタンドは必須かもしれない。
というのもセッティング位置にかなり敏感で、特に高さ方向が合ってないと低音がまったく聞こえず、シャカシャカしたラジオくさい音になる。

Solder the wires together and put shrink-tubing on to prevent anything shorting, and drill holes in the awful-speaker, which is a tenth the cost of the Auratone. Save the back plate off the Auratone just in case, reuse the screw holes for the bigger screws so you could put it all back if needed.

In the late 1970s, early 1980s, every recording studio I visited had a pair of Auratones on the mixing desk bridge. I never understood the point of trying to replicate a home or car stereo. If your mix sounds great on your monitors, compromising it for a car or home speakers seems counterintuitive.

Gute Abhöre ist i.d.R. analytisch (zumindest sollte sie das sein) und wird daher allgemein als eher nicht so angenehm empfunden (s. MS-10-M, Auratone usw.).

I have this little Tivoli radio I use. It's good for checking mono phase issues but it doesn't highlight the mids like an auratone.

50 years ago this month - July 1975 - the Auratone 5 series speakers go on sale to the public. Already in use in professional recording studios. Quincy Jones a big fan and used on many productions including Thriller.

I actually have a set of speakers that were often used in recording studios to mix music, Auratone 5C Sound Cube. They're small, single driver, not great. But...if you could mix the music to sound ok on them, it would sound good on crappy radios.

Even as is though… it is ultimate grotbox auratone style. BARKS like a mother, sounds blaring and hyperloud but I can also hear the finest details of the playback amp's noise behavior. And I hit it with Sgt Pepper Reprise… as one does… and all of that loud jumped right out, as expected, full marks.

Are they still using an Auratone for mix referencing? I've been out of the business for quite a while now, but it always blew me away that we would mix on $1m worth of equipment and then make sure it also sounded ok on a tiny mono TV speaker and make adjustments if it didn't.

Once you take the grille off you can get at the tiny screws, and get the speaker top off the (intact) electronics. The big drywall screws are for holding that part on firmly.
