Andrew McCarthy pointed a 12” telescope for about ~20 hours at the star AE Aurigae to reveal a complex nebula as shown in the following photograph.

It's 2.13am. My sky is clearing. I can see Capella (Alpha Aurigae). 🔭 🧪

Captured by ESO’s VLT, this could be our first direct glimpse of planet formation in action. A stunning spiral of dust and gas surrounds young star AB Aurigae—520 light-years away—where a ‘twist’ may mark the birth of a planet.

Taken with our VLT over a period of four years, these images show the rotating disc of gas & dust around the young star AB Aurigae.

Features like “twists” signal the places where #exoplanets could be forming 🪐

Planets form in swirling disks of gas and dust around newborn stars. It's not just a theory--we can watch it happening!

These images show the rotating disk around young star AB Aurigae, 520 light years from Earth. They were taking over 4 years at Paranal Observatory. 🧪🔭

Let the new year swirl in…

What looks like a vortex of fire is in reality a disc around the young AB Aurigae star.

Close to the centre, the ‘twist’ (in very bright yellow) marks the spot where scientists believe a planet is forming. 🔭

The Flaming Star Nebula's vibrant red hues are due to the ionized hydrogen gas emitting light, while the blue areas result from light reflected by interstellar dust.
