I wrote about the experience of taking a yearlong Austen class for #AHAPerspectives. Turns out, deep study in the humanities is valuable! Delving into literature is fascinating! Learning rules! 🗃️

Off to teach Crime Austen today - the text is Pride and Premeditation, a YA example of the genre. Given the mysteries in several Austen novels it’s an obvious extension. Who killed Mrs Tilney? What is Frank Churchill up to? What have Wickham and Willoughby been up to?

Jane Austen was best friends with a married couple called John and Mary Page, who were crushed to death by an avalanche while hiking in Switzerland. A witness told Austen later that he knew there was no hope for the couple when he saw "the tell-tale compression of the Pages."

Hay novelas de Jane Austen con más trama pero con mucha menos diversión.

Also, I did an interview recently where I was asked to name five formative books. (And yes, I probably read many of these waaay too young). They are:

-Earth's Children series, Jean M Auel
-Beloved, Toni Morrison
-House of the Spirits, Isabel Allende
-Pride & Prejudice, Austen
-The Hobbit, Tolkien
Okay Bluesky, we’ve talked about the books we’ve written, now it’s time to talk about books by others we love.

And I’m gonna have to go with Sabriel by @garthnix.bsky.social. It’s the first book in one of my favourite series - and I especially recommend the audiobooks! Narrated by Tim Curry!

About a hundred pages into Susanna Clarke’s “Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrel” and, lordy, I’m loving it. Like Jane Austen writing historical fantasy, full of catty magicians and fantastic worldbuilding.
