my god, they are trying to force retraction of authorship of already published past studies? Beyond ruining careers and general evil, it absolutely corrupts the scientific literature to not have correct authorship listed
Hearing CDC just advised any of their authors that they have contacted journals to have their names removed as authors on any scientific material that promote gender ideology.

Reviewing some old links before deleting my Twitter account I was reminded of "Civil disobedience in scientific authorship: Resistance and insubordination in science" (doi.org/10.1080/0898...) which contains a great table on deciding authorship order:

Humanities and social science profs are finding out how natural scientists treat authorship and we are losing our damn minds.
I just can't get past "What do you mean I have to check AAALLLLLLLL my citations?"

Like, dude, what? My PhD advisor would have hung me by my toenails on the quad if I didn't know what one of my citations was for.

Six years ago I published a book that engaged machine learning in terms of the politics of text, language & the impossibility of definitive authorship. Are any of the men writing now on LLMs, authorship, and text citing my 2020 work?…. No, reader, they are not.

Every one of these "If only it were possible to..." plugs for AI is animated by an incredibly deep resentment of either talent or authorship.

"human authorship is a 'bedrock requirement of copyright.'"
👏👏👏👏👏👏
AI-generated artwork is officially not eligible for copyright protection after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review the appeal.

The court ruled that a work must have a human creator in order to qualify for copyright.

1. A terrific piece that helps advance a longstanding question about Stan Lee's alleged authorship (or non-authorship) of 1960s Marvel comics. This deeply researched article -- which also serves as a profile of a fascinating writer -- has found some evidence that is major addition to this debate.
Me and @zachrabiroff.com have discovered that a gay, disabled, pill-popping Yale Drama grad likely ghostwrote many of Stan Lee's most famous comics

The AI authorship issue is real. We've caught papers that looked OK but had references to works by the *journal editors* that *do not exist*. Like, don't send us papers citing papers we know we didn't write, right?

Been considering authorship practices in academia, and I think "Guest, Gift and Ghost authorship" no longer describes the full range of unethical issues that we see. Here's a draft longer list. Would love opinions.
