I have lots of people who I know online, and like talking to, but who I never message. It doesn't work well to just say "hey, what's up?" but the alternative is either to just randomly talk about something I find interesting, or pepper them with questions to get them to talk.

Also, I wouldn't say the first test was completely successful - people on 3 (like myself at the time) didn't receive it (thankfully for me)
I'm now with EE so probably won't have such luck avoiding it this time #AutismProblems
