So what do we do about it?
The ways of recharging when in #AutisticBurnout can be deceptive. You might think that just sleeping more would help, and while catching up is important, but just sleeping all day doesn't help.
Isolating socially can help but too much causes painful loneliness.
I'm currently much more clumsy & forgetful than my baseline (left the stove burner on, didn't season my lunch and wondered why it didn't taste as good, keep knocking things over and tripping), & I now know in retrospect all the birthday/Halloween/family visit/weekend trip away of the last two weeks
I'm not formally diagnosed (as autistic; I am dx #ADHD), but I'm certain I'm #AuDHD based on interactions I've had w/other #autistic & AuDHD people, &reading things written by other ND people online.

Why does this matter? It means I can now understand myself in ways that were previously impossible.

ADHD burnout and autistic burnout can look alike. Many describe different roots: urgency for ADHD, masking and sensory load for autism.

Both tend to ease with less demand, not more effort.

Partner pointed out a few I didn't include. Sigh. Update won't fit in a single post, so doing it in an image. 🪔

I became a low demand parent only when nothing else worked. Now, I understand the biology of why it did: body budgets, inflammation, and why autistic and ADHD kids in burnout need fewer demands to heal.

They shouldn't call it #autisticburnout. They should call it autistic neurobiological collapse.

Calling it burnout makes it seem like it's a temporary dissatisfaction with a boring job that a quick vacation can fix.

Organizing my overwhelmed autistic brain to prevent burnout. It’s taking so much energy and I’m not done yet.

The reward: if I completely finish setting this up, I won’t feel guilty waiting until tomorrow to start any of it! :)

Curiosity goes a long way in autistic burnout recovery. Asking yourself things like: 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘴 𝘮𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦? 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘴 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥, 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘴 𝘣𝘢𝘥, 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯, 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘤𝘪𝘳𝘤𝘶𝘮𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴? 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦? 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘪𝘵 𝘨𝘦𝘵? 1/2

🧵Common warning signs of autistic burnout:

Either that it is coming soon, or that you’re in it.

Any individual may experience some of these, but probably never all of them.

In no particular order. -->

One really important tool during autistic burnout recovery is 𝙖 𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙛 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙞𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙧 𝙫𝙤𝙞𝙘𝙚. Being able to respond to yourself with compassion. Even when things go wrong, even when you make poor choices, even when you make reasonable choices and it all goes kablooey.

Autistic burnout is the final straw. It's the most obvious, physical sign of things that have been going on below the surface for a long time.

So what is the root of the issue? Does any of this sound familiar? 1/10

If you're interested in the Beyond Autistic Burnout course, and are also in what I call the deep depths of burnout, and you're asking yourself, "I’m so burned out, how will I even do another online course?" That is valid, and also, there's no pressure. --->

For Autistics in autistic burnout, recovery requires 𝙣𝙚𝙬 𝙨𝙠𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙨, not more pushing through. That would perpetuate the cycle into another burnout. But it is entirely possible to learn new skills even when it feels like you aren't able to right now. 1/2

Here's a short description of how #AutisticBurnout starts.

It think it often comes from a piling up of external and internalized stresses for a long period of time, usually due to a lack of acceptance, or support, in how we as Autistics function, and think, and experience the world. 1/2

Another invaluable skill to fully recover from autistic burnout is 𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙛 𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙪𝙣𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩. You can develop the skill of attuning to what your internal state is in the moment, of what your needs are, what your emotions are, what your desires are. 1/2
