This process (autotomy) may be an adaptation to internal parasite infestations, allowing the head to start over with a fresh body, free of parasites.

The world is filled with weird little guys with amazing abilities! Some are even cute!

The primary source is here:
Extreme autotomy and whole-body regeneration in photosynthetic sea slugs
Autotomy, the voluntary shedding of a body part, is common among animals. Mitoh and Yusa report an extreme case of autotomy with the shedding of the main body, including the whole heart, and subsequen...

Photosynthetic sea slugs can decapitate themselves & regenerate whole body from the detached head (without the heart or guts), while the shed body do not regenerate. The process takes ~2-3 weeks. A new model for regeneration?

The ability of some lizards to spontaneously drop their tails is called autotomy. I guess they confused autonomy for autotomy.

Random fact of the day: certain sea slugs can behead themselves and grow a new body. 🧪

Autotomy is from Greek "self" + "severing".

Muscles acting against the gaps between vertebrae rip the tail off, the skin contracts to reduce bleeding & the nerves in the tail cause uncontrolled contractions.

The predator/threat, now distracted by a wiggling tail, can be evaded easily.

Random science fact: when threatened, sea cucumbers eviscerate themselves and shoot their internal organs out of either their mouth or their cloaca in self- defense to scare away predators, an act called autotomy. Don't worry! They grow back!

halo autotomy. if you scare an angel bad enough her halo will drop off in an attempt to distract the predator and help her escape.

not to be redundant but it's still not getting enough press attention that we've completely defanged all regulatory autotomy, corporate oversight, and consumer protection

And when it IS covered it's done in a weird, nap-inducing, sterile way.

I'm still not sure the looming impact is fathomable

So this one isn’t strictly a #Nudibranch so doesn’t really qualify for #Nudivember. However Elysia marginata does do something pretty cool…..it performs an extreme form of Autotomy and decapitates itself and then regrows its entire body. It is thought this gets rid of parasites #MarineLife #Inverts

tbh the Semore hire looked good on paper; he's coached some good defenses. but if there had been any veto power whatsoever Godsey would not be employed right now and that alone is reason to give Key less autotomy.

Yeah I’m just obsessed with autotomy now.
